Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

are you sure its the case fan? I had to put my n40L under my desk cause of the fan noise which turned out to be the one on the PSU. Its not faulty its just the way it is

I also noticed the case fan to be tad noisy. But only because it is in my bed room.
(Soon going to be in the living room as soon as I figure out how to control XBMC with my Harmony remote)
There is a guid on changing the case fan here

On another note:
Is it a good idea to put a small(60GB) SSD as the OS drive and have 2 x 2TB drives as data drive to use this as a HTPC?

I'd read reports of the PSU fan being the cause of some complaints, so I disconnected the case fan to test and it turned out it was the culprit.

It's not a bad idea it would make the machine more snappy but overall i would say it's a waste on this type of server.

Are you aware the fan plug has a non standard wire layout?

Yeah, noticed that a few days ago when I pulled the mobo to upgrade the memory and do some testing, but thanks for the heads up.

Unlike pretty much every other 4 pin mobo header I've seen there isn't the option to just connect a 3 pin fan. Going to hack up a cheap extension cable so that any changes are reversable. Just need to fish out that spare fan-bus I have lying around in the loft now :)

Its gigabit?? Do you need 10GBE??

my Gigabit line hasn't got close to the max on this Server yet, am only getting around 50 to 60MB/s up and down, yet i can max it out with transfers to and from my computers :( thats why i was looking at a different NIC

on an another note is it possible to transfer the os install thats on a old 2.5 hard drive to a ssd as the old drive is pretty noisy after a couple of days of been on:confused:

My Microserver turned up a few days ago. I'm going to be using it as for streaming media centre, network storage and print server. Currently running Windows 7 x64 and have added a silent HD5570 and old 1TB HDD.

Impressed with how quiet this is. Just need to find my copy of powerDVD so i can start watching some Blu-Rays!

Probably not going to bother with a ram upgrade as i don't think it needs it for my usage.

Check you have the latest drivers, and Windows 7. The built in Nic is actually pretty good and you should be able to near enough max out a gigabit connection.
That said, I'm also running a PCI-E Intel NIC in mine (Pro/1000 CT), for teaming purposes.

Yes, it's very possible to clone your drive onto an SSD, there are some no-nonsense tools from Paragon and Acronis to do this. If you have an Intel drive they have a free rebranded Acronis tool available at http://www.intel.com/support/go/ssdinstallation/

You can also use DD from a linux/mac to clone over, but you need to be careful if the source drive is larger. There are some other free tools like clonezilla that could help.

am running WHS 2011 on a 250GB sata150 Drive, so am wanting to change it to a 120Gb SSD that i have, will the size be an issue

So you are able to team the onboard ethernet and the intel card?

well this machine just keeps on giving and giving lol

made decision last night to set up Plex Media Server on the N40L (running Windows home server 2011) and after a while of scraping data i tested it out with the biggest file i have on the drives and thats a direct Bluray rip of Gladiator 35Gb (ish) in total, not sure what i expected to be honest, didnt no if the server would grind to a halt or the cpu temps would climb until it cooked but nope none of that it streams it flawlessly with no stuttering or buffering, this now means that the Mac mini which is hooked up to the tv downstairs has full access as well as the tv upstairs in our room

the GF is very happy as the upstairs tv has another Mini (overkill for its use but it was a gift of the girlfriends parents for uni) and can now take 2 1080p streams with no faults or problems

:D chufted

WHS 2011 runs fine on a 120GB SSD as i've set a few installs up like this for friends.

If it was a fresh install WHS 2011 complains it wants something in the region of 160-180GB to install iirc. Although you can get round that by installing via slipstreaming and an config file.

I haven't tried it, but I imagine it shouldn't be an issue if you are using drive copying software.

I put windows 7 on mine and it all looks fine until it goes for the first full boot after install and I get:
"the bios in this system is not fully ACPI compliant"

Also I seem to only be seeing 1 stick of my RAM so its saying 3 gig rather than 8 which is very strange, any advice guys?

I should add this is running on the other sata port with a 60 gig SSD, no BIOS update yet, worth trying that later?

You won't have a problem moving just WHS to an SSD.

I had a spare 50GB SSD lying around so I cloned the partition(s) with Acronis Disk Director 11. Having the data on a different drive to the OS makes the whole thing easier to manage too.

Hi guys
