Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

If you get green drives turn off the auto head parking as it kills drives.

I have sent back about 3 and am currently using 4 of them all of which seem fine now. Due to having the auto head parking turned off.

sorry but looking around on the net i cant find anything to tell me that the WD20EARX models need the parking disabled can u point me in the right direction

Just put the modded bios on, thanks for the help.

My vertex 2E which will hold the os was getting 135mbs, now ahci is on it has gone up to 276mbs and trim enabled..

Just a quick question, does the N36L support SATA3 (via a BIOS hack or something)?

I have a Crucial M4 in it, which I assume is running at SATA2 speeds? I doubt the performance would increase that much by installing a hacked SATA3 BIOS but worth a shot.

Also, how can I check what mode it is in now? In the BIOS it says SATA AHCI, during POST it identifies 4 IDE devices. I am using the stock firmware from HP's page and Server 2008 R2.

I am aware that Windows will probably BSOD if I change the mode after OS installation, but I am sure I am in SATA (2?) mode, so if the BIOS does give SATA3 I doubt it would break the windows install (if it did I would have to reflash the BIOS as I cba to reinstall windows)

I don't need/want to enable the AHCI on the other ports (which the hacked BIOSes do).

The BIOS hack dosen't enable SATA 3 only enables AHCI on the ODD SATA port.

However AHCI mode is reccomended on SSD's as it increses performance also reduces wear on the drive.

I realise this has probably been asked numerous times, but what's the best way to mount an ssd in the odd bay? preferably non visible so i can leave the cover on the front? I did a quick search in the thread and it seems ther Icy Dock MB882SP-1S-2B 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch SATA HDD/SSD Converter - Black has been reccommended, would this sit behind the cover?

also to add what length sata cables are people using to run from the mb sata to the odd bay?

Thanks

theres a very small section under the 5.25 bay that holds cables most people slide it in there and route the cables out of the back, as for the length of the cable i cant remember the specs that people use ;)

Got my mum a N40 as I have a N36. Does the N40L come with one or two dimms?

If it comes with one dimm is there any harm in giving her my spare 1gb dimm so she can have 3gb in total?

looking at my N40 it comes with one 2gb stick :)

woot kits arrived XMS3 8Gb DDR in first which works a treat plugged in the ODD Sata cable hooked it up to a drive bay with power going to the 2.5 drive and the bay drive, using a spare esata cable i had around but its to long for now (1.5m lol) all my drives are screwed in to the bay ports ready for the wdidle3 update ( can it do multiple drives at the same time instead of connecting them 1 at a time)

Thanks. :)

I can't decide which one I want more, your Mum or the server.

Haha, does it help you decide if I tell you she is going to install Ubuntu?

Why don't you keep the N40L and give your mum the slightly slower N36L?

She is using it more as a PC where as I am using it as a htpc/skygo box so dont really need the extra power, she probably does.:)

So you have decided to turn off the auto head parking.

Do you have another graphics card in your server?

Does Sky Go support GPU acceleration?

I have a Nvidia GT520 with HDMI out, mainly for the audio. Skygo uses silverlight which I don't think fully supports GPU acceleration.

Using GPU-Z when I go full screen I use 24% of my GPU power and 85% CPU, doesn't seem as efficient as flash hardware acceleration.
