Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

If I buy a stick of 8Gb can I also use the existing 2Gb (I.e. 10Gb total) or do I need to just do a straight swap?

It doesn't do dual channel so no problem on that score but as you probably know it only supports 8GB officially so it'll be a case of trail and error I guess, just like those who've managed to get some types of 16GB to work.

I may have had too much wine tonight, but cant get my head around a small issue with ESXi.

I want to present my 4x3TB drives to a VM (NAS4Free) as RDM's. I can't create the RDM's unless a VMFS datastore has been created. I can't create a VMFS datastore on the USB drive i've used to install ESXI on.

Any ideas or am I being stupid? Or do I need to carve off a small VMFS datastore from one of the drives to do this?

I threw a 4gb stick in along side the original 2g and it works fine so I cant see why 8gb wouldn't work.

Saying that I know the microserver is fussy about what you use for 16gb, is it the 8gb modules its fussy about or having 16gb in total ?

tried freenas again last night, spent about another hour trying to set it up with no luck.

just cant get my head around it.

going to stick with windows server 12 i think.

Yeah 5.1 update 1. Install taking forever on to USB drive =\

Possibly your issue. Although I have installed it myself on a USB flash drive without issues. In the end though I resorted to installing onto one of the HDD. It will partition off the drive enough to house itself so you won't end up committing a whole drive just for ESXi.

I did notice that after installation one of the CPU's was at 100%. ESXtop recognised the DCUI taking all of this CPU time. When I disconnected the wireless keyboard it completely dropped. I had it plugged in at the time of the ESXi install, so I'm going to blame that :).

That's exactly what you have to do. ESXi knows it is running off a USB key, and won't use it for storing anything (even logs). So you need at least one datastore somewhere. I would add a small drive (SSD would be preferable) in the top of the microserver.

Try reinstalling again without that keyboard installed (it only takes a few minutes) -- it's worth knowing for sure what was causing the problem. It's not normal for it to take that long to install.

If it's any consolation, they sell easily on eBay for good money because they're so pricey. I sold mine before I bought the Microserver else I'd probably have kept it!

They're not all that expensive when you consider anything worth buying starts over £100 anyway and sky's the limit.
But yeah, the resell value is quite high.

Has anyone else had issues using >2TB hard drives via the eSATA port? I ended up corrupting a lot of data after not checking the drive I hooked up had been properly addressed!

Can't find any information anywhere, or BIOS updates :(

theyre not hard to find. google "nexus doubletwin" on a uk only search and its 2nd result down. £11.39 including delivery

I got my nexus double twin from ebay. I set up a search, so it informed me whenever one comes in stock. They crop up every month or so.
