Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Missed this thread... these two pull most of the weight at home now - I got them both in the last round of cashback offers, last September.

vOweu2Dl.jpg

Both are N54L, 10GB RAM, 4x1TB Disk.

The left runs Hyper-V 2012R2 with 4 VM's on it. The right is a Microsoft DPM 2012R2 Server, hence the tape drive, also attached to the backup server, is a HP MSL2024 tape library.

Yo XL5, I asked in another thread but i'm not sure you've seen it, where did you get your server racks from, are they 12u? ;)

Looks like an HP rack to me, and was probably being chucked due to a huge virtualisation push.
Having a quick look back, I found his original purdy picture, and it's a 42U rack.

Thanks for the insight, there's a 'post your rack' thread, in which he posted some pictures of 3 or so 12u racks, which I think look pretty cute, wouldn't mind getting a couple but they're pretty pricey ~£250 new...

Had a look on the 'bay & gumtree but they're all huge 25/42u racks which are a bit big for my place!

Nice, but tape is sooooo yesteryear :)

D2D to butt man...... ;)

You're right - at work that's what I do. But I have over 100 LTO2 tapes, and three LTO2 drives. Paying for cloud seems like a waste of money.

This one is a HP 10000 series 42U rack. Got on ebay for about £150.

I have a N40L as a HTPC with a 6450 GPU and 8GB ram but I am having trouble playing MVC 3D films on it due to the processor.

I also have a N54L as a file server, my question is could I switch them over? including all the drives and the OS then put the GPU and extra ram from the N40L to the N54L?

Obviously the GPU won't be an issue but will I have issues with the operating systems and drivers?

N40L is currently running Win 7 64
N54L is currently running WHS 2011

I know this isnt the same but i had an NL36 an upgraded to an NL54

I imaged the 250gb disk then flashed that onto and SSD and kept my storage disks and array through drivebender and all, everyithing worked well.

Whs2011, i dont think it even knew

Bios Upgrade

Hi

Ive tried to do the bios upgrade, but keeps coming up with Invalid system disk, yes I have the USB on priority 1 of the boot order.

ive looked at the following websites which goes through the procedure and these have been followed correctly.

I think it may be down to the usb key im using anyone else having the same issues

Mine is a N54L im assuming that the bios is the same for all the microserver range.

Many thanks

I'm thinking of changing my OS from FreeNAS to a Windows based solution.

What would be the best way to migrate all my data? I assume being ZFS that a straight disk swap is out of the question - so that leaves external drives etc, correct?

All of those links look a bit outdated. The latest version was made 01/12/2013 and can be found from post #10748 here.

The latest version of the official BIOS flash can be found at HPs website but requires an active warranty to download. The link to the download is http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/psi/swdHome/?lang=en&cc=us&sp4ts.oid=4310887

You then replace the official O41100113.ROM file as in the other instructions.

It should still work with the old one though I would've thought. It sounds like your USB is dodgy :( Got another one to try with?

I'm sure I had this same issue, and from memory it's one of 2 things:

1. You actually didn't quite put the files onto the USB in the right way (I can try to look up the details but it's similar to the difference between extracting the file you downloaded or not, or something like that)... You might actually be able to find a post by me in this thread where someone pointed this out to me if you search

2. I think the USB has to be formatted as a slightly non-standard filesystem (i.e. not FAT-32 or NTFS)

Sorry I can't be more helpful - if that doesn't give you a poke in the right direction let me know and I can look up the details again

Can't get the BIOS, crappy hosting lol

Anyone got it that I can grab it off, then I'll stick it somewhere useful...

Just ordered a 16Gb kit for mine, see what difference it makes..

Finally got my server setup in its permanent location today.

Went from (excuse the sorry looking cupboard, it got neglected when the room was last decorated).

1 SSD and 4 HDDs in the Server
5 HDDs in the DAS to the right
2 HDDs in the DAS to the left

Now just to decide what to put on the extra shelves.

Look at Rossmacs post number 7448. Thats the one I used last week on my N54L

That's the same link to the German site that has the link to the crappy file hosting site.

Annoyingly I had the bios mod last week as I updated one of my servers, but have since wiped the memory stick and deleted the files. I also need the bios mod again to flash my other server but can't download from that link :(

Does anyone have it handy?

There you go.

just a note for those having bios flashing problems I had to remove the HD's from mine (even the stock one) before it would let me flash the bios.
