Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

My N54L turned up today, just have to wait 25 days until I can use it (birthday).
I think I'm going to throw in 3 x 1TB drives plus a 1.5TB I have spare to make a 2TB RAID 10 With the additional slot used by the 250GB HDD for ESXI / VM Images.

Hi

Ive tried to do the bios upgrade, but keeps coming up with Invalid system disk, yes I have the USB on priority 1 of the boot order.

ive looked at the following websites which goes through the procedure and these have been followed correctly.

I think it may be down to the usb key im using anyone else having the same issues

Mine is a N54L im assuming that the bios is the same for all the microserver range.

Many thanks

Im using a Lexar 64gb usb stick, when formatting it using the HPQUSB.exe program im getting a syslinux error message saying it has stopped responding. Im using win7 home premier edition. do we no what could be causing the error, as using windows 7 on the n54l box. also do we have a list of known working usb keys that flashes the bios without any issues.

Have also downloaded the latest modified bios version from http://www.hardwareluxx.de/communit...n54l-microserver-752079-430.html#post21503128 rather than the old links above.

many thanks

Use rufus (http://rufus.akeo.ie/) and select the bootable FreeDOS option.

hello folks, ive got an idea but im not quite sure how to implement it.

ive moved over to an android phone and want to utilise dropbox (or similar) to backup my photos to my server.

i can install dropbox as a service on the server which is fine but the thing im looking to do is get my server to copy the images from the dropbox folder when it detects new photos and after its done delete them from dropbox folder. therefore pretty much giving me unlimited space.

accessing these files isnt an issue as i use crashplan so can view the images on my phone

Eventghost might work?

Install dropbox and then eventghost to scan the folder, when it sees new files, copy them to another location and then delete them from the dropbox folder.

I had this. I think its the codec used for the file you want to see. I had loads of video files on the server and my sammy tv couldn't see one of them but could the rest so I figured it was down to codec in some way

Odd thing is it was working fine, so I don't think its the codec...?

Samsungs are quite particular about the codec. Mkv is your best bet for full compatibility.

my Sammy wont play mkv over network, only via usb device attached directly to tv, all I can think is its a setting somewhere on the whs box

Now that HP have added the warranty requirement to download the BIOS, how can you download the files if you dont have a hp account or the HP CD/DVD that came with the microserver?

Currently installing Server 2012 R2 on the standard bios, but failing..

Have you tried creating a HP account?

I have one that only exists as a result of a warranty claim for a HP monitor. Neither of my Microservers are registered against it but it still allowed the BIOS download.

what GPU would you currently recommend fo N54L?

I'm looking at Sapphire HD6450 11190-02-20G for around 27 quid brand new.

anything significantly cheaper/better?

Depends what you are doing with it, for HTPC duties the 6450 will be fine. Best to check the card comes with a half-height bracket, otherwise you can't screw it in.
