Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

vSphere as in the hypervisor?
I needed to install ESXi when my box only had the 2GB of RAM installed. There was a hack you could do to tell the installer to only need 2MB of RAM.

Possibly a slightly dumb question... but if you override the installer limit to put ESXi on with only 2Gb of RAM, how limited are you in terms of the amount of VMs you can get away with? (I mean the limit must be there for a reason right?)

I originally wanted to put ESXi on and then have an UnRAID VM as well as maybe a firewall VM, maybe webserver VM etc. but I didn't know there was a way around the limit so I just put UnRAID on there instead. If I wanted to re-install with ESXi what are the chances that an UnRAID VM will be able to remount my existing array?

I was running synology and a windows VM just fine. I did buy another 8Gb stick and set them both to have 2Gb apiece and they ran smoother.

Very limited indeed. But my Microserver out of the box I wanted to install ESXi whilst I waited for my 8GB RAM to arrive in the post. At least in the mean time I could setup ESXi. The lack of RAM is the biggest issue when using multiple VM's. If your desperate to install ESXi then that hack does work.

I wish I bought one of these when they were "really" cheap.
Any ideas where I can pick one up at a moderate price as I think I may need to learn some linux servery goodness kind of soon

I'm going to be selling 2 x 4GB sticks for the Microserver shortly. I've upgraded to the Fujitsu Primergy TX100 S3p which is a quad core Xeon, and gone to W2012 R2 Essentials.

Sadly, the RAM out of the Microserver doesn't work in the Primergy so these are surplus.

LOL...was just about to post a question about what ram people recommend and if I can buy from here?

I only bought mine Tuesday and am playing catch up.

Got WHS 2011 although may just thorw W8 pro on. Thoughts?

Similar thoughts myself - have Windows Server 2012 being tested at the moment - but dont particulary like it (just not used to it I suppose)

So - probably planning on probably putting windows 7 on in my case - saves faffing a bit

Need xbmc too so cant use freenas etc

Just ordered mine, don't think I'll get the cashback offer as it was off of an ebay seller but if I do great, if not never mind.
Now I need RAM...
