Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Possibly a stupid question but can I use ESXI to install a version of windows server with xbmc on while having other VMs on there aswell, e.g give the xbmc VM full video card access etc by default and then have the other VMs just running "invisible"?

I currently use VMware within Windows server but would like to play with ESXI.
You will need a dedicated gpu to pass through to the windows vm

I don't think it's possible on the Gen 7 Microserver. The VMWare feature requires VT-d support which is Intel CPU specific.

The Gen 8 may well do it, if HP use CPUs that support it.

ESXI can use full hardware pass thru on amd processors providing the chip supports it and the motherboard has a full iommu in the bios. The microserver does and it can also be done with consumer hardware providing you chose carefully. I myself took this route and have a Dell sas 6/ir passed through to Debian VM

The Microserver uses a Turion Neo which is a embedded part. I don't think iommu was part of the design brief.

I have it set up with a 6450 at the moment.

Is there anything special I will need to do when setting up, thinking of doing this on saturday, ( I have a n54L btw only 6gb ram but that should be enough for a windows server + a few light weight linux boxes?)

Frozennova is right - some AMD CPUs in the FX and Opteron ranges support iommu which is supported in ESXi. Everything I've seen indicates the N40L/N54L Microservers do not support this feature ... which confuses me as he's claiming to run it.

Maybe he's referring to the Gen8?

Both Athlon II Phenom II and the AM3 sempron chips will do it. IOMMU is a bios feature no processor. I believe it's AMD-Vi the processor needs

As you can see from my own server with a sempron X2 190

edit : think I confused matters in my last post, I'm not using hardware pass through on a Microserver but I am using consumer grade hardware.

I currently have Windows Server 2012 installed on my Microserver, and have the following hard drives:-

C - OS
D - 1TB Files
E - 3TB Videos
F - 3TB Videos Backup

I have been copy and pasting ad-hoc to get Videos to Videos Backup.

What software can do this automatically as incremental backups? However I don't want any compression, just a simple copy and paste of any new files, and keep it to that I can still search and play videos?

Cheers

On my Windows server I used a program called SmartSync Pro. It is fairly old now but will do exactly what you need it to.

On my Linux box I use rsync, not sure if there is a windows version of that available?

I see the N54L's are back on offer again (£129.99) :)

Might buy another one as I'm running out of disk space on my one

Oh god :-( just when I started to get some money back together again another reason to get skint.

I can't help but think my N40 could do with upgrading to an N54 then the N40 can be used as a test pfsense box :-/

OK I bought one. I'm thinking to transfer the HDD's form my N40 into the N54 and the 8GB RAM as it's primary use is a Windows server and supposedly you get a much better experience with the 54's in windows than you do with the N40's.

Not decided what to do with the 40 yet.....(xpenology is calling but I can't warrant not selling it)

You could get 70 for the N40 and buy another N54L :p
