Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Todo: 9.5mm SSD adaptor, HP bracket, sata to odd power/sata cable.

Have a google for 'General 2.5" SSD to 3.5" SATA Hard Disk Drive HDD Adapter CADDY TRAY CAGE Hot Swap Plug' which should come in around £12. They are basically identical to the HP adaptors for the caddies and you can just plug an SSD straight in.

Okay, so it took the 6Tb drive happily enough, but I'm now having massive issues with FreeNAS. I've spent two whole evenings trying to get it to work, with no luck. In Network I can see the server (called FreeNAS), and one directory inside "homes" - curiously, I've not made any such directory, and FreeNAS describes the directory as follows:
mnt>Default>Steve
I can never see Steve, and I can't mount anything (Steve, or homes) as a network drive. I can't access any, despite wasting hours messing around with user profiles and guest profiles, and I've double checked that CIFS was turned on a dozen times.

Pulling my hair out now. Has anyone else had similar troubles using FreeNAS with Windows 7?

Freenas can be a *****. Have you tried setting up a fresh share to try with. Do you have a local user or did you use anonymous? I always check permissions with the shell rather than the gui

Picked up a Gen8 for my folks office today, had a quick fiddle with it earlier but need to sit down and have a proper look at it. Looks alright so far though, nice little box and forgot how nice and handy iLO can be :)

Took a while but I managed to put on the modded bios I now have a 60gb SSD as boot for windows 2012 R2 and hot swap drive bays got 10tb attached 4tb via wdmycloud. Plex server setup and running nice, only frustration here is to transfer files between pc and server or my cloud I'm only getting 5mb, so will look into that soon. Looking to upgrade the memory only got the standard 2gb. Torrents are DL from PC then auto moved to G7, Plex then adds to media library :) Farley happy overall

I'm gonna be studying for the first exam on the MCSA (just the 70-410 to start with) in the next few months, I was already looking at one of these as a file server for streaming to 1 or 2 Raspberry Pi's running Kodi/XBMC and running Plex server, would one be powerful enough with Server 2012 running on it to run a few VM's to act as a box that I can mess around with while learning stuff for the MCSA cert?

I have W8 pro on my normal PC so could always run client Hyper-V on that with a few server 2012 VM.

Cheaper than £185 (seem to have been that price for a while with that company)?

I can't have been paying enough attention :p. All I can remember for a bit after launch is that they were ~£400?

Looks like I missed a £35 cash back deal at Christmas too, which would have made them £150.

I think I'll pick one up if they can be had again in the £100-£150 range. Although I've been reading that they need ECC Unbuffered which seems to cost slightly more?

I think I've decided on picking up a Gen 8. However, I'm not sure which OS to go for? I have a MacBook Air so I would like to use the server as a target for Time Machine backups and will obviously need to support AFP. I also want to use this as a Plex Server plus sabnzbd and sick beard.

What can you guys recommend?
