Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Does the cashback on these have to be claimed before the offer runs out (30th March) or can you claim after the 30th if you bought it before the offer ends? Payday for me is the 26th so would be tight buying it then to get the cashback in before the 30th.

The product has to be delivered and invoiced before the offer ends to apply. The cashback itself can still be claimed 30-60 days after that end date.

Going by the neverending cashback offer on the previous generations, there's no reason to suspect this won't continue too.

Anyone ever used the flexraid software with their home custom nas?

This guy at work built a HP G7 N54L and uses that flexraid software instead of hardware raid because he says it comes with more features and thinks its better all around option that raid.

I am considering buying a HP G7 N54L to setup a nas myself and this flexraid software although cost £65 would allow me to keep the data on my drives and still add in parity drive for resilience.

Cheers, I'll be picking one up very soon I think in that case.

Anyone running VM's on an SSD in the ODD slot? Looking on the homeservershow forums a lot of people have the OS and/or VM's on an SSD then the 4 drive bays for storage.

I''d be running it with Server 2012 OS (can get licences through my work) and then hyper-v within 2012 running several 2012 VM's for lab purposes, then another VM running Xpenology to serve media to a couple of raspberry pi's and the plex app.

I need to look a bit more into xpenology tbh :D

Could this server case be used as a DAS?

Still not sure about the best way to backup my drives

I did want to use offsite and backup which I have Syncback SE to backup via FTP. But feel that 3-4TB will take sometime

Hi all,

Can I be cheeky and ask someone to send me some of the little screws that fix the drive into the caddy of an N54L? I moved recently and binned a lot of stuff. I need 8!

Alternatively does anyone know the type of screw so I can just get some on eBay?

I am!

Small SSD in the ODD slot, running ESXI 5.5 and various OS images, other 4 days are full of 512gb SSDs.
Running lots of versions of Windows with SQL Server installed, used for testing clustering, migration, distributed BI warehouses and anything else I want to play with.

Also have small VMs running for each major OS that I have to support... So if someone has a problem I am but a stones throw away from being able to see the exact screens/options they will see.

Ordered my Gen8 microserver, should have it Monday :)

For those running one of these at home, do you all run it headless and connect via remote desktop connection from your home PC's? I could connect to my monitor via vga *shudders at the thought of vga but long term would prefer to run it headless. I'll see if I can get remote connection confirgured from my work PC (for studying purposes) but might just use teamviewer instead.

Anything I need to do before installing an OS, firmware updates etc?

Anyway to get USB3 in to the Gen8?

Also is there anyway to only RAID 2 of the bays and leave the other 2 just for storage?(so that I can use it to stream to TV or cloud music etc?)

It has 2 on the back (which irks me as DL380p doesn't have USB 3.0 yet they sell a custom fit RDX drive with USB 3.0 connection for it?!).

Yes you can arrange the drive bays like that.

Well blow me... it's come! Yodel (for a change!) do better than expected :p

Free next working day delivery from the usual placE, was expecting in on Monday but it turned up an hour ago. It's a hefty bit of kit, feels very well built.

Firmware updates done, I just need to buy some drives now! :D oh and the RAM, and fine a Xeon CPU to install...

I'm thinking a 1TB drive for the OS (Server 2012 R2) and to store the many VM's on, and then a 3 or4TB drive to start with for Xpenology for my media. Can add extra drives at a later date. Or do I go down the SSD in the ODD bay route, but I don't want to have the main drives in a RAID array.

Anything that doesn't end up smashed to pieces or left accidentally up a tree is better than expected of Yodel.
:D

Still trying to find a reason to order one of these
Got a N54L which is still fine for my DL use and storing music/films
Cashback Offer runs out end of month, and they are good value........Decisions Decisions:p

Yeah, I keep looking at them... then remember the N40L hasn't given me a jot of bother in years. If it ain't broke don't fix it!

N40L pah you new boys with your shiny new boxes, my N36L is still toiling away with no issues at all, now has a 60GB ssd and 5 4TB drives, turned out to be one of the best buys ever :)

N54L, can you use the eSATA port as well and the four HDD's and ODD so a total of six SATA devices? Or will is disable one of the existing SATA channels ?
