Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

maybe I just have the wrong version or something. I used this custom image

vSphere 5.1 U3 Dec 2014 from here

but I can't find any free esxi 5.1 downloads on vmware, only this

edit:
Finally got it. Searched for hypervisor then manually edited the url to go back a version (6 -> 5). It took me to hypervisor 5.5 and the license from that page works for my esxi 5.1 install via vsphere client 5.1.

could someone please tell me what 'chmod' permissions looks like for 'homes' dir on synoloy/xpenology.

It has just started showing up in filestation and my permissions look like this:

drwxrwxrwx 5 root root 4096 Apr 3 23:43 homes

I think I may have modified it accidently whilst struggling with transmission setup.

(sorry, wrong thread.)

Think thats right and should a 30GB do the job for OS?

Nope, that looks to have a single molex and 2 sata power connectors.

You want a molex to molex (one male, one female connector) which has an extra sata power.

Google "A14GG" - got mine from a high street shop, should be easy to find ;)

And a 30GB SSD - not sure, depends what OS you're running.

The Gen8 microservers have USB and micro SD internally.

p.s. did you know that HP switched from G5, G6, G7 to Gen8 because G8 (gee-ate) sounds like Mandarin slang for gentleman's sausage :D

Has anybody got a WD Red 6TB in their N54L? Just want to make sure it works before I pull the trigger. Thanks!

Well... that 30GB is 30quid.

You can get the same make of SSD but the 120GB version for only 42 quid... I would spend the extra 12 quid for 4x the space personally, but that's up to you... 30GB would be a bit small for me, but it depends entirely on your choice of OS.

If you go anywhere near a modern microsoft OS, then I wouldn't want to go for less than 50GB... which is actually what I plan on using in one of mine as I have a spare 50GB SSD not doing anything.

Seconded .30 GB for a windows instal is too small.itried about a month or 2 ago only had 4 gb left over after updates.ended up getting a 128 Crucial

Don't. Google them, they changed the chips so their really slow SSD's now, nothing as advertised.

The speed still looks to be acceptable... really.

We are talking about the cheapest SSD on the market you know... I would be mostly caring about the reliability & they are still faster than spinning platter drives.

Think about intended use.

We are talking about an OS drive that will be barely used for server applications... I would almost go for a 2.5" spinning platter drive... I just don't want to. Even as a media pc, it would still be more than quick enough... you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between these and the top-end SSDs in both of those usage scenarios... even if you did, it would only be for 0.01% of its usage life.

120GB SSD for 42 quid is a relative bargain... but I notice the same size Crucial BX100 is 55... so I'll probably end up with that one or a Samsung.

I only picked the 120GB version of that drive because it's the cheapest one I saw, he already picked the smaller version and with only a 12 quid price difference, it would be easy for him to justify the difference + with the intended use... a 120GB USB pen would probably be fast enough :p

I run a 60GB V300 as an OS drive in my server.

Not the fastest but who needs massive amounts of IOPS on a glorified NAS. Quiet and low power are all that really matter

I picked up a number of them I discovered the bait and switch they pulled and tested mine. Two of them are only just faster than a 2.5" mechanical disk.

But yeah, for an OS drive it won't matter, just be aware that you are buying a gimped drive sold to you as a none gimped one.

I'll agree it was a sly move by Kingston.

The Kingston was originally the boot drive in my main PC and outside of benchmarks I honestly didn't notice a difference when I upgraded to a Crucial MX100.
