Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Wow prices came down fast! Def tempted now sat £120 is a bargain.

How much better is the Gen8 then the N40L? I'm using it as a HTPC with Kodi and possibly plex in the future. I see it only has 2gb ram included, assume more ECC is going to be expensive??

TBH once you have a GFX card installed that can play 1080p I cant really see any major difference...

I have a 3 x N54L servers...One running PLEX server with the Data and movies on...One running as a backup server backing up the Personal Data folders like pics/music/home movies from Main server and the third one in my lounge running plex Home theatre with a 6540 GFX card in and its smooth as butter...

I was tempted to upgrade but I will see no benefit whatsover...either streaming media...Backing up or watching movies...For anything else I use my X99 gaming machine and laptops and ipads...

Servers should just be setup and forgotten...I haven't looked at the main one in the out house for months...The N54L is fast enough for any home environment...

Can someone help me out, i waited on the last one and missed the deal only for this to happen a few days later lol.

What do I need to buy with this to flesh out a decent download/media server? I want to run plex media server on it as well as sabnzbds/sickbead/couchpotato.

I assume the ram is enough for what i need anyway, just not sure what is required in the way of drives and cables.

Was thinking a 3tb wd red for the storage, but what about something to put an OS on? small ssd or mechanical? Do cables come with hdd these days or would i need to purchase those too.

Cheers.for the help :)

I ran 4GB for a long time, with 2x 3TB WD Reds. Ubuntu 14.04. But will happily run W7/8.1/WHS etc. GPU wise I've got a low profile EVGA (or Zotac will do) Geforce GT 610 2GB (or 1GB) to offload HD video to.

I now run a N54L, 8GB, 2x3TB in mirror and 2X2TB in mirror, GT610 2GB, HP IR receiver, and Ubuntu 14.04. Software wise: Kodi, Sickbeard, Sab, CouchPotato, Netatalk/Bonjour/NFS/AFP/Timemachine etc.

Edit - just came here to say that the Gen8 is on cashback now... bargainous price!

What is your OS installed on mate? One of those drives or do you keep the OS separate?

Oh yeah, sorry. I've got a 60GB SSD in the ODD bay, zip tied down. Split the molex off into 2 SATA powers, then ran off the ODD SATA port.

You'll need to flash it with the modded BIOS to get access to this and enable AHCI on this port, it'll also give you hot swap capability on the drive bays too.

hmmm £60 cashback now... I only got £35 cashback (not been paid it yet either)

Gunna email their claim team.

I find the best way to install the OS is using a USB pen, I have plugged in my USB pen straight into the internal USB port on the motherboard (its a standard external USB port, not a pin port like on retail motherboards.) That way there is no nasty looking USB pen plugged into any of the external USB ports.

Free next day delivery too... sod it, I just ordered another one for delivery on Tuesday before I drive back :D

Still #250-300 for a 4-bay synology... 8 bays over 2 servers for the price of 1 synology... nice :)

Now you just need 8 x 8TB drives :)
£200 each.... so £1600 and you're done

Hah... too early for the 8TBs for me... I've had a couple of failures and lost data I didn't want to lose over the years and so now I want to see failure rates before I invest in something like that... even with Raid-5... Seagate burned me badly... I had 2 drives fail within moments of each other.

I'm happy with the 3TB and 4TB WD Reds... still a bit nervous about the 6TB drives & not touching the 8TBs for a while yet :)

Will likely pick up 8x 4TB WD Reds :)

You don't get a HDD its barebone. And 2GB has always been minimum.

Anyway what's the best way to go about installing OS on to another HHD? Like in the DVD bay etc? Do people use SSD?
