Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Thanks guys for your helpful feedback. I will probably trial WHS2011 to start with and then take up your suggestion, Snapshot, and experiment with a *ix-based system. I maybe back if I get stuck.

Hi, I've recently sold my n54l but have realised that I've lost the optical bay screws that came with it. Standard ODD screws don't have a big enough head to grip in the slots in the optical bay and from a quick Google I can't find anywhere obvious to buy replacements.
Has anyone here had to replace these screws and if so where did you manage to find new ones from?

The E3-1265L I got from the auction place, doesn't exist on ark intel. Only v2 exists. So what exactly is the cpu I bought? I think I've got confused between similar named ones and bought the wrong one. Only record I can find of it is random benchmarking websites.

That's the Sandy Bridge version. v2 is the Ivy Bridge.

I have the same CPU in a gen8 under the stock heatsink.

No complaints, running 8 VMs doing various duties with no problems. Bargain chip for the money .

Ah right good to know but still thought it should appear under ark intel. V2 and V3 are there so had me worried it was some dodgey Chinese knock off.

Do you know what the TWP for it is? I know the Ivy Bridge versions tend to be lower hence cheaper running costs.

48w if I remember rightly.

Just so this is seen I'll post this here rather than editing my previous post.

I've successfully upgraded the cpu in my gen 8 today and also installed the HP P410 raid controller. However since doing this, none of my drives are detected. I've installed this driver and can see the raid controller in device manager but disk manager isn't picking the drives up.

Any ideas? Do I need to install firmware too? The P410 has two mSAS ports but I'm guessing it doesn't matter which one I use?

The drives were detected when I use the onboard raid controller.

Have you configured any arrays on the controller BIOS?

edit:
The controller only passes arrays to Windows, not the disks directly.
You can either create the array using the controller BIOS at boot time or install HPE Smart Storage Administrator (HPE SSA) for Windows.

another edit:
Best that I mention that adding disks to an array will blank them.

Do you use any extra CPU cooling? I also have 2 with Xeon 1270 v2 and 1220 v2. I'm just using the 35W heatsink and the temperatures seem to be reasonable. I'm interested to know what other people with 69W TDP CPUs are doing.

I'm running a 1230 v2 with totally stock cooling (no heat pipe) and its been flawless for a few years now. I was a little concerned when I first bought it but it hasn't had any thermal issues even under heavy load in my loft during the hot summer.

Thanks. I'll give it a go at weekend and see which one is easiest to use.

Trying to get into the P410i bios during post but I don't seem to get the option. I'm doing something wrong but not sure what. BIOS detects it but doesn't prompt me to press a 'F' key like some guides on Youtube do.

Do I need to disable the on-board raid controller or something first?

Can i just check. There's an online store selling the Gen10 for £340. Then it looks like there's a deal for £200 cashback at the moment. Am i right then in thinking that it's only going to cost me £140?

If so how do they actually make money off these things?

EDIT - Also the claim for says it wants a business name, does that mean individuals aren't eligible?

Are you sure the £200 is not dependant on buying Windows server licences and other bits? That's the only type of deal I can see at the moment.

I've seen the ad. You need to buy an awful lot extra to get that £200 back. And the Gen 10 isn't a patch on the Gen 8. Hopefully the Gen 11 will be better.

Cheers, i have seen a Gen8 with 8gb ram and 6tb storage for £300, just not sure whether at that price i'm better just building something.
