Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

That's great.

I'm more exicited about getting this gear than I was about my Sandybridge system. Looking forward to setting it all up.

Cheers

I would just add i have have big problems in esata. It will not work with a simple esata cable to sata. I have had to use a caddy/enclosure and an esata to esata cable then it is recognised fine and everything installs nicely.

Thanks for the headsup. Nice to know there is an option for 6 drives though.

Amazing value for money especially when you factor in the cash back.

Yeh I figured as much.

Won't be doing anything majorly intensive anyway. Although it'd be nice to fit a cheeky low power video card in there somewhere and a USB dongle for sound. Think the GT520 is appropriate... although I can't remember what the equivalent ATI would be.

Just hope the rebate comes before the end of the month. Mortgage etc...

WHS2011 is running nicely, got the trial of Lights Out installed and running last night BUT it only gives me the option of shutting down the server, as it says it doesnt support hibernate..

Has anyone got hibernate working on this machine?

Thanks,
Sam

Is hibernate enabled in WHS2011?

"powercfg -query" to find out the status.

"powercfg -h on" to turn it on if its off.

I got mine set up with SBS2003, SBS2008, SBS2011 and Vista Business as VM's

2008R2 Enterprise running Hyper-V as the host.

Obviously only running one SBS at a time lol Does this for tesking purposes. Very glad I got this system as it got me through my SBS2008 exam and the payrise that came with it :D

I'm I right in thinking there are a few different models? What model are people going for? I'm looking for one to use as a NAS/media server with a few 2TB drives in.

What software are people using for this application?

The N36L that is currently on £100 cashback is the 250gb version.. Have a look at the HP page with the offers on for the exact part number you need.

Windows Home Server 2011 here, going to start moving the 2tb drives across tonight, will end up with 4x2tb drives and the standard 250gb in mine.

Nope one model, two revisions.

The latest revision has a larger hard drive and a lower wattage psu, that's it.

Thanks Sam. Initially I was thinking WHS but I quite like the look of FreeNAS.

Are there any issues with the lower spec PSU running a full set of drives?

Figures for WD caviar 2TB, I imagine that others are similar:

Electrical Specifications

Read/Write 6.00 Watts
Idle 3.7 Watts
Standby 0.80 Watts
Sleep 0.80 Watts

So 5 of them, all going flat out = 30 watts.... Not sure what the rest of the system consumes, but it would be designed with this in mind as it has 4x 3.5" bays plus a 5.25 bay....

As above, no issue at all.

I'm very impressed with mine, works perfectly, chugging along all day everyday. The only issue is the pillock administrating it!
