Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Tell you tomorrow as soon as my gbit switch arrives. Currently getting 13mB/s (which is pretty damned good for 100mbit!) which isn't what you want to hear :P

Reports from other forums show 110mB/s being quite normal however.

That's not bad at all for 100mbit!

Looking forward to seeing your results :)

Hi Guys just a quick question
I am going to install the OS (2011 home Server) onto the hard drive that came with the unit and have that connected to the Optical SATA header.
I am going to Add 2*2TB drives to the 4 bay and use the Bios RAID to Mirror the drives.
Should I use the hacked bios for this configuration?
Also in future would I be able to install a couple more drives without any rebuilding.

Thanks for your help

Yes use the hacked BIOS as you will be using the ODD SATA port for your OS.

You will be able to add drives later but not to the same array without rebuilding. For instance, you wouldn't be able to add 2 drives and make it RAID10 (mirrored stripe). At best you could have another mirrored array but I am unsure how many arrays the onboard controller is capable of creating.

Yes you should because the optical header won't be running at full speed, you need the hacked bios with the additional options to enable that speed.

Ok thats kewl Ill go track the bios down and update it.
Just tried a trial run of installing the OS but it fails as I dont have 2 gig ram installed, pretty sure I have seen people mention they go it running with only 1 gig, I presume this corsair kit will fit fine ? CMV4GX3M2A1333C9

I am ok with the Mirror I probably wont fill 2 TB but if I do Ill just add another Mirror later with a couple more drives, just want reliability and ease of use with redundancy, been reading this thread and changed ma mind about 4 times already :-)

im using mine currently with 4 x wd20ears installed using freenas 8.01beta2 with 8gb ram but i am only getting 30mb/s when transferring from my PC's ssd drive, any ideas?

Hi
I have downloaded the Latest Bios and the hack then flashed as per the instructions so I guess I am set to Go, just need the Raid drives (F4's) and extra Ram.
Are there any settings in the Bios that I should be changing? to help the set up I am going to use perform well. (OS drive on ODD 2*2TB Mirrored using the Bios Mirror raid 1)
I am still unsure if the ram I am looking at buying will be ok (see previous post)

Thanks for all the help you guys are giving

**** Edit Just noticed this Ram is on offer, would this be ok to use?

Hmm I dont see the Advanced > AHCI Configuration

Yea I should have said, don't follow it like gospel. Not sure if those screens are from an older BIOS or what but I dont have that option either. The important settings are enabling "Write Cache" and the last screenshot showing "SATA IDE Combined" to disabled.

Ahh Ok Cheers

Well, I replaced the stock fan with an "Alpenföhn Föhn 120 Wing Boost" earlier today. Fan spins at 500RPM in the BIOS and I am not sure if that's a little too slow but only time will tell. What are others using to monitor system temps/fan speeds etc with their microserver?

Hmm go the ram and hard drives today, put it all together and now the system will not boot, could it be the ram thats causing the issue?

I am at the moment using speedfan, but this is only to monitor temps. It doesnt show fan RPM and adjust fan speed, does anyone know any apps that will control the fan speed in this server? IE speed it up? or will I have to go for a fan controller of some sort and a new fan?
