Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Has anyone added a Bluray drive to this? I am thinking of buying one and getting a Bluray drive so I can rip them straight to the hard drives. Also maybe add a graphics card for HD playback.

I haven't, but there is absolutely no reason why you couldn't.

Woot, mine came. Sent off for my cashback.

As I'm putting drives in the optical bay, I want to replace the bay cover with a mesh/vented one to let some air in (that metal plate behind the plastic cover was a PITA to remove!), can anyone point me/Trust me in the direction of a suitable cover?

Well nice impulse buy for tonight along with a HD5450. Planning of running it as file store and xbmc, will I need more ram?

with how cheap it is you definitely cant go wrong adding 4gb of ram to the mix, especially to give it a chance with full hidef if you want to run windows. My ION based HTPC couldnt decode 1080 with win7 with 1gb but eats it up with 4gb.

i bought the 8gb kingston dual channel kit on the specials page (OCUK), can i just use 4gb and sell the other stick? doubt very much i will need 8gb.

cheers for the tip :)

will try reading back through this thread to get some RAM suggestions

Just as a by the way, only some of the manufacturers have a single slot for their low-profile bracket. XFX is great, but Asus' low profile bracket takes up 2 slots which isn't suitable for the case!

Anyone managed to mount an SSD in one of the front bays?

I want to boot off a SSD and have 3 2TB disks, I need to keep the optical drive bay for my BR drive.

From looking at the way a 3.5" disk sits in the caddy, the 2.5" will be too central once inside a 2.5" to 3.5" converter then in the microserver caddy.

I am considering to buy HP ProLiant MicroServer N36L for media streaming and some web development (PHP/mySQL/Apache).

I am not sure which OS I should go for, Unraid or Freenas, or which do you recommend?

1) I will need about 6TB and setup as raid or raid a like.

2) Most of the the HD movies will be accessed from TV Media Player device (medi8tor player).

3) Transfer speed must be good. According to medi8tor, NFS is recommended protocol for streaming movies.

4) Will be downloading a lot using sabnzbd (usenet client)

5) Should be able to share on Windows (smb)

6) Software: Backup schedule, FTP and other few program...

I have Qnap TS-210 at the moment, now looking for upgrade and better performance.

If you don't plan on moving it about much, you can fit a 2.5" in between the optical drive and drive bays, just means you push all the power and SATA cables to one side so it can rest on the metal surface (at an angle, and not completely 'in', hence the not moving it) and need a couple of cables. Picture of it a few pages back.

ahh didnt know about that...I went for the VTX3D 5450 2GB, pictures look like its a single slot...we will see I guess.

I would try two OS'es through a virtualisation layer if I were you. Install ESXi 4.1 onto a USB Stick (2GB or more) mounted into the internal USB port and boot from it. Then once ESXi is set-up use the VI Client to install further OS'es as virtual machines.

This way you can have a dedicated web server on one OS and your media sharing duties on another. If you set the datastore block size at it's maximum you can have 2TB volumes available within ESXi as storage for your data.

I do this on my Microserver and have installed Windows Home Server v1 as my backup and media sharing solution, and Elastix as a telephone server. I also have a couple of Win 2K8 test servers for studying and a Win 7 client.

Works very very well imo.

If you are struggling on the datastore side (or on the ESXi installation side) I can help you with that.

When do they normally say if the cashback is going to be extended?

Tempted to pick one of these up, but could do with waiting until next month.

The offer page HP have gets updated, the submission form dates changed. I would expect it'll probably be extended to the end of August, as it's been going on since last year and they're selling like hotcakes from what I gather.
