Hi im new here just wanted to ask if i wanted to buy a good Digital Compatct with a good zoom an was willing to pay about 150-200 (possibly a bit more) for it what would you recommend. Also i want manual control with aperture and shutter speed etc as well which unfortunately rules out the Panasonic lumix range which i was originally looking at.

i got a panasonic tz6 with 12x zoom for £148 new off ebay and a free 4gig SD card
lovely cam, works great

shame u discounting the panny

You can get a refurbished Fuji F200EXR for £160 (google 'fuji refurb'), that has full manual and delivers pretty good quality with a 28-140mm equivalent lens. They normally go for around £240.

Dpreview rated the sx200 below the TZ6 overall in their "super zoom" group test. It came bottom in the image quality test, it was particulary poor at nightshots low light. Having said that they are very critical and its still a fairly competent camera by the looks of it.

Well are Fuji cameras any good and do they have good manual features e.g. Fuji F72EXR

Reviews would indicate its a an ok camera with a manual mode. F70 seems to be the same camera with a different name.

"CONCLUSIONS
I really liked the F70EXR and I had lots of fun shooting with it. We are right in the middle of our fall color peak here in the Ohio Valley and I shot the digital equivalent of dozens of rolls of film trying to capture that once-a-year riot of autumn/harvest hues. The F70EXR did a good job and never let me down (although when the battery icon says Low Battery, it isn't kidding) but in the final analysis this camera just misses greatness.

Almost anyone who buys the F70EXR will like it - the price is right, it is amazingly flexible/tweakable, it produces superb images with bright colors, wide dynamic range, low noise levels, and it is easy to use. So what's the problem with the F70EXR? This camera really could have put Fuji on the map. Add more flexibility in selecting image resolution, add a small EVF, and enable RAW file capture and the F70EXR could have been a baby G11 - with more flexibility and more natural colors.

Pros:

* 10x zoom
* Great pictures
* Fuji Slide Simulation Options
* Incredibly flexible
* Nice Price

Cons:

* Certain shooting modes limited to 5 megapixels
* No Optical viewfinder/EVF
* No RAW file mode

This is the problem with trying to choose a digital camera each has flaws and each has good points. If the Panasonic Lumix had some manual features id probably chose that, Though i am seriously considering the Canon SX200, as it seems decent enough. Also there arent many non SLRs that allow the lens to be kept open for longer than 8-15 seconds it seems, for night shots in manual mode.

Why not get an entry level DSLR? The sony A200 is a great camera for the money, and will give considerable flexibility of a point and shoot. Can be had for around £250 2nd hand with kit lens.
