Good game recording program??

Thx I'll record it at 30 and see how it goes, mite also try Fraps aswell :)(used tht before but that was few years ago lol).

I've always recorded at 60fps using fraps, going to try BF3 and see what its like. Will upload when I'm done ;)

Hehe great be sure to post here the utube vid of it :).
I just recorded a game of FIFA on afterburner. awesome quality however its 4.43gb. any1 know how I can compress the size down without losing much quality??? its AVI file

cheers

Xfire is an option as well, but I've always found it to use lots of system resources and the files are an absolute nightmare to edit. They are stored in "xfire codec" and need to be encoded with a special tool hidden in the installation folder that only uses one cpu core at any given time. YMMV, I guess?

I didn't know MSI afterburner had a recording tool so I'm going to give that a try. Thanks a lot guys.

To record in game audio, do you need the latest beta of afterburner? Still running the last official version here.

Fraps and afterburner are the only 2 I'd bother with in all honesty. Doing vids for youtube with anything that uses a proprietary file format is just asking for trouble and while hypercam and camtasia work ok for desktop recording, I've never had a satisfactory performance off them while gaming. So basically if you don't like fraps, give afterburner a go. I've been using fraps for a long time so I've gotten used to it which is why I stick with that.

Yeah you need the latest beta.

I recorded quite a long video.. and it won't show up in vegas, it has audio. It also plays the video in WMP/VLC but I cant get any preview of it in vegas and I tried to do a quick render and it just comes out as a black screen with audio.

I changed the compression on Afterburner and that seems to work, having it set to "uncompressed"

Ideas?

Well leaving it as uncompressed is a bad idea. 27gig for 4minutes of footage!!

The files are so big, I cant even view them smoothly to see what I got :(

Strange that Vegas can't playback MJPG, doesn't show any picture for me either just sound! Live Movie Maker can display it properly though. :/

In theory, shouldn't saving them uncompressed make it less CPU intense? I've got the hard disk space for it.
EDIT: I guess then the hard disk would be a massive bottleneck. Please ignore stupid post :p.

Well it looks like you need an MJPEG codec but they all seem to be ones you have to buy. Will look into it a bit tomorrow, I'm not quite sure recording at 60fps is the thing to be doing with BF3 but we'll have to wait and see.

I recorded a 6minute clip, its going to take 20minutes to render! 13gig raw file. I've gotta goto bed really, work tomorrow or I'll spend all night working this out.

Its a shame, probably have to still use fraps to record with.. silly options for Afterburner though for the compression formats :S

I use Fraps and record to a different Hard Drive which reduces the FPS loss by a very large amount. The files are huge but after coverting them through Song Vegas they usually come out at less than 300MB for a 10 minute video.

Well I rendered a 6minute video of me flying the jet, recorded at 80% quality, full screen 60fps and there are slow downs when things get a little close to the ground. Didnt notice it when playing, I was constantly checking my FPS and very rarely was it even out of 70fps.

Looks like it was dropping the FPS by around 10-15fps by recording so barely noticeable.

One thing I did notice in the rendered video was that it showed up a lot of jaggies.. which arent noticeable when you're playing. So I'm going to try for 30fps and 100% quality to see what I get.

It'd be nice if someone could share their gaming render codec/settings :)

I've just given the uncompressed recording ago, 8 mins 28 of footage = 43.9Gb ROFL. Saying that I didn't notice any slow down at all. Time to have a mess around in Vegas.
