Good idea to do a test build outside of case?

Evening all.....

I will be recieved all the bits to my new PC next week and so have been researching pc building a fair bit.

In a few videos/tutorials people mention doing a test build first to ensure everything works, this consists of building:-
Motherboard,
Ram,
Cpu,
Cpu Cooler,
GPU (if applicable).

How many people do this, it sounds like a good idea to me?

Thanks,
Harry

I dont do it because the chances are it all works fine and then ill have to move it all into the case anyways :p

Sound idea though.

Have never done it and never will. :p

Just whack it in.

Put CPU/Any rear Heatsink attachments/memory in the motherboard before mounting it in the case though.

Well that is 2 votes for just putting it in, any other opinions? :P

Do people still use anti static bands? I haven't seen them mentioned in many tutorials.

Edit: 3 votes.

Nope, no bands.

Touch a radiator/other grounded surface before working and don't wear a trakky or anything prone to building static!

You shouldn't need an anti static wristband as long as you discharge the static electricity you have built up on you (e.g. by touching a grounded metal surface (case)) and don't work without any shoes on while standing on a static generating surface (i.e. carpet).

As for the build out of case issue, I don't see the reason unless it doesn't work in the case. Chances are the problems you will experience are related to when it's inside the case (e.g. shorting).

Cheers for replies.

Don't think i'll bother building out of case then, and I will use the tips about earthing. Does the PSU need to be in the case and connected to mains for it to be earthed (read this in a few tutorials).

Found out the GPU i ordered has been delayed, ARGH, will be atleast another week more waiting time now. :(

Touching the case doesn't technically ground you, just puts you at the same potential as it and any components it touches (which is fine).

Just thought I'd add that.

test it outside the case first, just mobo, mem, gpu, cpu and psu if you want, just to make sure its all compatible... its a logical thing to do, but when i bought new stuff, i just stuck it in my case and it worked

The logical thing to do would be to ensure your parts are compatible prior to buying and receiving them. :p
