Hello,

I'm looking to buy my very first AMD PC (I've been using Intel since 1989) and I'd like some suggestions.

This is a possible configuration I have in mind:

Component selection

Case (Case)
Corsair 5000D AIRFLOW Black (CC-9011210-WW)

CPU (Processor)
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8x 4.20-5.00GHz (100-100000910WOF)

Mainboard
MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WIFI (7D75-001R)

Video Card (VGA Card)
onBoard Graphic

System Memory (RAM)
64GB Kingston FURY Beast 5600MHz DDR5 (KF556C40BBK2-64)

Power Supply Unit (PSU)
1000W be quiet! PURE POWER 12 M (BN345) ATX 3.0

SSD
2TB WD Blue SN580 NVMe M.2 (Read 4150MB/s - Write 4150MB/s)

Hard Disc (HDD)
2TB Seagate BarraCuda (ST2000DM008)
Disc Drive (Drive)
No Disk Drive

CPU Cooler (Cooler)
Noctua NH-D15 (842431012456)

Soundcard
onBoard Sound

Case Fan
120mm Default Case Fan
120mm Default Case Fan

W-LAN Unit internal
onBoard WIFI + Bluetooth
Cardreader intern
No Cardreader
Card Upgrades
No Card Upgrade

LAN Card
onBoard LAN
Office
No Office

Operating System (Ready to use installed)
Windows 11 64Bit Professional installed activated digital key (ready to work - without data media)

What I'm not sure about is Motherboard and RAM, do you have any suggestion?
Also GPU will be picked later, undecided between 7800XT or waiting for a sub-300€ deal on 7600XT.

Thank you for any tips!

If I google the model number it appears to be an Intel XMP 3.0 kit. Is it on the QVL? If not, I'd switch to an EXPO kit.

X3D CPUs aren't particularly bothered about ram speed, so I consider 5600 to be fine, though obviously you'll get higher fps with higher speed RAM (mainlywhen you're CPU bottenecked).

7600 XT would be a weird pairing, I wouldn't bother buying the X3D if that is your plan (a 7500F or 7600 is more than fine).
Any suggestion on which EXPO kit?
7600XT is the cheap option which is going to be replaced in a few years, this is going to be a 6-10 years build with only GPU and SSD being replaced most likely.

ps120se would probably be a better option, and cheaper
IIRC the best air coolers on the market are those:

In theory the both cool more than the classic DH-15S but I'm looking for something that will reliably last 10+ years so I'm not sure I want to risk.

I'm honestly tempted by the Thermalright, in other news I will finally build my new rig after over 11 years by the end of March so expect more silly posts by someone who built a PC last time about 20 years ago...

If AMD doesn't announce anything shortly i'm going to build my setup next month... Are the MB and RAM kits you suggested also good for a 7950X3D?

Resurrecting this thread for an update, with a possible new configuration:

Case
Corsair iCUE 5000D Airflow

PSU
Be Quiet! Straight Power 12 80 PLUS Platinum ATX 3.0 PCIe 5.0

CPU
AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D

Cooling
DeepCool ASSASSIN IV

MB
Gigabyte B650E AORUS MASTER

Ram
Corsair Vengeance 64GB (2x32) DDR5 6000MHz CL40 XMP 3.0

GPU
Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 7900 GRE

SSD
Seagate 2TB Barracuda NVME PCIe 4.0 x4

HDD
Seagate BarraCuda ST2000DM008 2TB Sata III 3,5" 7200rpm 256MB

This will cost me 2500€ with shipping & assembly.
Do you see anything that will cause trouble in this config?

£400 on that motherboard is ridiculous you should look at the

Asus ROG Strix B650E-E Gaming WIFI which will save you £130 or the Asus ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming WIF which will save you £180 has 1 less m2 slot.

Thank you, although I've heard bad things about ASUS MBs lately, is it a good model?

Both the E-E and the E-F are great pcie 5 motherboards with 4 and 3 m2 slots respectively and are very simmlar.

Unless the Gigabyte board gives you something you need then don't waste your money tfer are great boards around the £200 to £280 mark.

Read reviews is always wise and compare.

What's you main use ?
80% gaming, 20% machine learning (that's what the 64GB RAM is for)
Tom's Hardware gives it a good score but having informed opinions from actual users is always better imho.

Was thinking could you get away with the 7800x3d but mayb those extra cores on the 7950x3d mite be handy In learning.

There a mechanical hard drive I personally would change that to an SSD or m2 drive.
Yes, using gradient boosting the extra cores are handy, it definitely saves time.
There is a NVME SSD too, the HDD is there for backup of less important but bulky files.

Thank you for the tip!
Replaced RAM with the following:

RAM KINGSTON FURY BEAST DDR5 6000MHZ 64GB (2X32) EXPO CL36 NERO

Slightly cheaper, lower latency and same speed.

I'm definitely getting that board, so far I ordered case, PSU and RAM as sellers here in Italy are getting silly with Paypal purchase limits.
Expect me asking for assembly advice pretty soon!

ok, first of my idiot pc build questions:

Do I take off the label from my M2 SSD?
I have the Asus ROG Strix B650E-E Gaming WIFI and I had to take off a big lid to mount the SSD which might be the heatsink.
If so, do I have to peel the label away and mount the heatsink back in place?

Thank you!

ok, more idiot questions...

First of all, I put the power cables as for the manual:

Big one isn't an issue but there are two smaller ones on top:

This is the cable I used, it has one end with one cable (which I guess being the longer part goes into the PSU) and one split end which I connected to the MB with the other split being loose:

Is it OK this way?

There are also 2 cables I have no idea about:

This one should be USB 3 but it doesn't seem to have a connector on the MB

And finally two small loose ones that I have no idea what they are for, there is no mention either on motherboad or chassis manual:

Could you please help me?

Yup! So long as the loose one is safely tucked away and won't tangle with everything.

Looks more like a SATA connector? It could also be a Type-C, but I don't own a case with a Type-C so I don't know what they look like.

There's no label on them at all? Do they only have one pin?
It seems an USB connector but there is a 3.2 one instead so it might be optional.

Yes, they have one pin and there is no label at all, they seem to be coming from the front panel.
Anyone with a corsair 5000d?

Thank you!

Yes, it was power led.
I'm almost done, need to install hard disk and then put together and mount the thermalright frost commander 140.

Question: what will happen if I plug the PC in and something inside is not plugged correctly? I'm sorry about the influx of basic steps but it's been exactly 20 years since I last tried self building...
