I am planning to arrange a demo at Richer sounds this week to test out a few soundbars/ soundbases.

I was trying to think of a few films to bring, and which part to watch. For example I was thinking the first 5 minutes of gladiator.

Anyone have any suggestions? probably no more than a 5 minute clip.

Action scenes from Iron man are fairly PG rated for public display with ACDC blasting away, Saving Private Ryan Beach scene though hardly kiddy friendly but will have people diving for cover.

Any scene from Terminator 2 sky net edition blu ray (my favourite is the scene at the galleria where the two terminators meet in the hallway)

Lotr two towers - when the Ents (Trees) are speaking to Merry and Pippin

The Fifth Element - the beginning -great atmospheric sounds in space

Any Transformers film - usually any action scene sounds pretty good

Quantum of solace - opening scene with car chase

Inception - any scene basically

The Matrix - any scene (bullet dodge is always a good one and the kunfu morpheus fight )

mad max fury road - any action scene with the guy with the guy on the bungee swing playing guitar.

spectre - carnival scene

inception - can't remember specific scenes but some great ones in there

soundbars and soundbases unless they have a seperate sub probably don't need to be tested tbh. whatever you can afford and buy yamaha should be obvious to anyone that has done their research.

How much different are sound bars at say £400, I can't imagine any of them being amazing?

I though they were primarily aimed at replacing the abomination that are super thin TV speakers, now with the added bonus some setups contain a sub to make them sound worth buying. Not to say you shouldn't be demoing them, making an informed purchase is very important, and as much as guns and explosions are great, to me the mid range would be the most important since voices make up most of a films sound output. :)

soundbars are for people who do not have the space for speakers yet want better than built in sound.

yamaha models can cost up £1600

they are the rolls royce of sound bars.

there are headphones out there that cost £20 and some that cost £2000.

you get what you pay for but usually there is a sweet spot. in headphones that's around the £150-£250 mark

A few of my favourites:

Stars Wars Ep 1 Pod Race as has been mentioned

The Fifth Element - The Diva's song

Pulse (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0454919/) - There's a great scene in this little known film where there's a big server room an a huge low bass pulsing effect. It's one I'd love to hear on a system with a serious sub because even on a a setup of floorstanders and small rears it was huge bass!!

They are a massive difference from TV speakers!

For me it is the space issue, and also what I can get past the wife. Something like 5.1 is definitely not happening as she doesn't want visible speakers everywhere. Will probably get a soundbase that the TV shows on as it is the most discreet option and doesn't require a sub.

Dark Night - Bat-mobile into Bat Pod sequence
MI Rogue Nation - car chase and then motorbike chase
Cap America Winter Soldier - Ambush on Nick Fury
The Island - Pursuit with the train parts bouncing down the road.
The Avengers - the beginning of the battle

The above is my current favourites.
