the Brecon Beacons is probably more inside your range.

but wales wouldbe a good choice
Spleenus said:The Lakes is no-where near that far away. It takes me 4.5hours to get to Lancaster from Essex, so to get to the Lakes from London is only going to be ~5 hours.
It is nice up there though especially driving over Wrynose and Hardknott Pass towards Ravenglass. Love that drive.

I'm judging that by how long it takes me to London (greenwich) from stoke (just off M6) and how long it takes me to get to the lakes.
Best times I'd expect to London is 4 hours, likewise best to the lakes (all the way in, ullswater - not kendal or similar) is 2 hours. 2+6 would be a best case 6 hours. If I'm not speeding or the M6 is busy it'll take me 3 hours to get to ullswater just from stoke..
If I'm not speeding, or there is traffic, that could easily turn into 8 hours, I know when I've arrived in London on a Friday night the traffic was a nightmare.
