This will decide my next phone, either the Nexus or the Note 2 I think.

Yeah, if I were to rush out and decide I must buy something now, it would be the Note2. With the Google event only on Monday, it would be daft to do that though. I'm at least going to wait for OneX+ and Nexus 4 reviews.

Slightly OT, but what are pros and cons of the "pure android" nexus phones over the HTC/Samsung 'skinned' phones?

You get the updates as soon as google releases them and they're not full of any bloat.

Pros:

Fast software updates direct from google( no waiting for oems to add their rubbish)
No bloatware
Stock android appearance

Cons:

......
None that i can think of, i have an s3 so am not biased. But anything an oem adds that is useful gets released on the play store anyway so better having the choice.

The largest benefit is your phone always staying relevant, whenever a new version of android gets released your phone will be first in line to get all the new juicy features.

Say for instance a brand new version of android is released on Monday containing some amazing features that everyone wants, a galaxy nexus owner can expect to get the update within a few weeks however an S3 owner would be forced to wait perhaps 6 months or more.

That and the default skin of android is much more attractive to look at then touchwiz and various other ugly manufacturer skins and doesn't include all the annoying bloatware.

edit: The biggest noticeable con is that a Nexus device never ships with an SD card slot, meaning space on the phones is always limited.

By a mile the biggest issue is the SD card slot missing on Nexus phones. Cloud storage isn't big on mobile yet (and comes with the issue of speed of transfer and power loss using so much data) and google's insistance of not programming a real solution to the file system with sd cards is extremely grating to me.

Will be wathing then

They don't want sd cards. No Os builder wants SD cards for several reasons. It was only included so they could produce super cheap phones back in the day, it's just how long this process will take, I'm guessing rather slowly. They will now slowly limit and eventually withdraw the functions.
Even MS only included limited SD support due to public.

Pretty much everything that has been said above.

However, oem android skins do have advantages to, there stock apps are far better and they do have some nice features over stock android e.g. Touchwiz smart features, although you can get most of these on the play store now.

Regarding bloat, tbh it isn't as bad as what it was like a year ago and ever since ics you can disable them without having to root apart from the main stuff I.e. Sense launcher etc.

And any bloat doesn't really affect the speed or smoothness these days.

Pretty much every custom skin has a far better camera app especially senses camera app. I still haven't found stock apps on other company skins, even stock android that is as good as senses stock gallery, calendar, browser etc. And some 3rd party apps aren't as good either, only the browsers are a lot better when it comes to features, although the note II touchwiz version of gallery looks superb.

The only thing I wish I could change with sense is the theme throughout, much rather have the stock android look. Mainly that is why I use some 3rd party apps. Many say the same about touchwiz to.

Updates is a huge advantage though. Most phones will only get 1-2 updates and it takes months for them to arrive.

So say I'm not keen on Nexus 4, and decide to go with my current plan of getting a noteII. Are the XDA custom roms on newest software quicker than waiting for an official release? Or would it be stuck with 4.1 until an official samsung release is made regardless?

Regarding themes etc, I much prefer the standard Samsung touch wiz look. I don't mean offence to anyone, but I was underwhelmed browsing through the mobile desktop picture thread.

Sorry for hijacking the thread!
