Anyone had an email saying 'maestro' cards are no longer ok to use from 27th July?
What a bunch of eejits. It's the only card i have from my bank. I don't need any others, its a common enough card. So why has one of hte biggest companies in the world decided to bin it?
Can't email them to find out as they don't reply (apparently).
I'll be damned if i sing up for a credit card just to use their goddamm service.

So annoying, what a step backwards imho.

Aaaghhhh!!!

I'll bet it's not very widely used, so the cost of allowing it must exceed the fees they cream off transactions made with it. It's simple business.

excuse my ignorance but what is so great about a visa debit? I have a Maestro from HSBC....am I missing out on something?

You should be using a credit card online really, mainly for the added protection in case something goes wrong, but also in case your details get intercepted - if somebody empties your bank account it's a lot more of a problem than if somebody charges stuff to your credit card.

Get a Visa Debit you peasant.

Maestro isn't a peasant card, Solo is

You won't for much longer, HSBC are replacing all their Maestro cards with Visa Debit. RBS Group (including Natwest etc) are doing the same, starting this year.

As said, HSBC are going VISA as are RBS and Natwest. Which is kind of annoying for me, as Maestro don't charge for currency exchange withdrawals.

Visa debit is accepted everywhere that regular visa is. By contrast, Maestro is for 16 year olds with their Fisher Price My First Bank Account and is accepted in about 3 shops in the entire world.

Absolute rubbish. Maestro is only given to people with full current accounts and every shop in this country that takes cards will be able to accept it. Solo cards are given to the 'Fisher Price My First Bank Account' customers.

Indeed. Matestro is also essential for currency - as in my above post.

Strange how when most of my friends started Uni they were only offered a Maestro account. It's widely known as the 'student' account around Nottingham/Derby.

visa debit cards are much better tbh credit card aint worth the hassle only increases your debts :)

and you might say well if you can control yourself then it wont be a problem but you would be suprised at the amount of people that are in debt.

It is known as that, but it's just a load of rubbish... it's the standard current account card with Natwest - whether you're a student or not is irrelevant.

It depends on the bank... Solo is the Maestro for juniors, Maestro is a full debit card and cheque guarentee card, used to be Switch which Solo was derived from. Visa Debit is much newer.
