Google Home

I am trying to get my Google Home setup properly. Sometimes if I play something from my phone (via Chromecast) it won't recognise something is playing when I try to pause it via voice.

Is this a common issue? And is it possible to fix? I have the Chromecast setup as the same room as the Google home.

Depends on how you're casting it. If you're casting it from Android then it's more like a mirrored screen. If you cast it from the app itself, then the voice commands should work.

Well I say should but I don't have it working with my Android TV, but apparently that's more due to UK ATV not having Google Assistant.

Its a standard cast though an app (NOT mirroring)

I keep forgetting to ask this - does anyone know how on earth to update the GH? Mine has been telling me for a week now that an update is available and to go into the app however I can't find a single thing in there. Rebooting the device in the hopes that it would auto update hasn't worked like I assumed.

Are you sure it's not telling you that about something connected to it? For a week, it kept telling me to relink the device after I operated the lights. I finally got round to doing it in the Google Home app and all is good.

Have you tried removing the power and waiting 5 mins before reconnecting it?
Tried that but no luck.

Ok this is exactly what it is doing. It is asking me to relink my connected device. That's rather cryptic though as the Google Home app reveals absolutely nothing about what requires an update.

Spent an hour and a half unlinking and relinking all my devices and never have imagined it being such faff. Everytime I relinked the GH it would want me to retrain my voice, which would result in an 'enrolment failed' message.

Still not 100% sure if anything has updated or what. I've got 3x clowncasts, 1x clowncast audio and the Home. It would be nice if the home app actually indicated what device requires an update.

It gives you that message after every command? You don't have anything else connected (that you control via GH), lights or thermostat?

Every few commands from the looks of it. I forgot to mention that I have Hue lighting linked to the GH too. They've been fine though so I unlinked and relinked those again anyway. Guess time will tell if that's sorted it.

@Kainz @AndyCr15 I got the "you need to unlink/link for an important firmware update" message with the Hue kit when I shouted at them... doing that brought it into line, so I'm not sure if it was a Hue update or GH update that's kicked it off.

Yeah, i had this exact message recently related to a Hue update, the lights still worked but gave the message after each command. Updated/unlinked and relinked and all was fine

Amazon missed out on the mobile phone (Android and iOS dominate) and wants to play a leading role in the smart home through voice activation devices. It sees Google as its main competitor. Amazon has now refused to sell newer Nest products on its site so Google has pulled all Nest products from Amazon. I wonder if this is viewed as anti-competitive in Europe? Like many on this site, I have my Nest Thermostat linked to my Google Home.

Thanks for the replies chaps. Yes as garbage UI and navigation wise as the Home app is, it was the Hue lighting that seemed to have done the trick (which was a different section of the app). It is a real shame the app can't notify you as to what requires re-linking. They really need to sort that mess of an app out as too many useful features are buried under layers of UI. The Devices section with oversized cards and generic Google product icons definitely needs re-doing.

Am i right in saying Google Home's don't talk to each other. the other day I set an alarm on the one in the living and when I went to the kitchen and told that one to cancel the alarm it said no alarms were set.

With alarms I've noticed it's only set on the local home.

Why is the Harmony integration so terrible? I can count on one hand the amount of times I've managed to start an activity first time, most of the time it's just the "Sorry, I can't verify your voice" 3 times, then it finally works. However last night it worked first time on a few different activities (turn TV on, turn Apple TV on, pause, resume etc.) and it was great. It even skipped the whole "let's get Harmony" and additional Harmony voice nonsense. Did something change?

I was this close to downloading IFTTT and trying to set things up for that.. :o

How do we know we have the firmware that lets us do this? It does sound quite useful, I will definitely use it as when I use my mobile I have it on the desk on speakerphone anyway.
