Google Pixel and Pixel XL

why would you go from an edge7 to a pixel? thats more of a sidestep than an upgrade.

Did you see the recent survey where following their experience with Samsung and the Note 7, that 40% of Samsung Note 7 users will never buy a smartphone from Samsung again? Perhaps that is why Samsung is saying that they expect the hit to operating profits this quarter and in future will be £ 2.5 billion as a result of the Note 7 debacle.

Once you are on Android, 90% of people stick with Android for their next phone, according to surveys. Google has been marketing the Pixel aggressively and it seems likely that many Note 7 users will switch to Pixel.

Hangouts v Allo and Duo

I have found that in the past month I have been using Allo and Duo a lot more than Hangouts. Both have a lot of in-built advantages are fun to use. Has anyone else found that too?

Interesting to note that on the Pixel, Hangouts has been disabled while Allo and Duo are front and centre. If you want to re-enable Hangouts that is still possible from the Play Store. Seems Google trying to transition Hangouts to be mainly for group collaboration, esp in a company setting.

Hey all,

I preordered a Pixel XL 128GB yesterday with a estimated delivery of 21-23 November. However, just checked my credit card and the money has been taken, despite Google stating that money will not be taken until it has shipped? Will phone them tomorrow to ask why but just wondered if this has happened to anyone else?

Mainly because the battery has gone pathetic on my Edge, and my brother needs a new phone so gives me an excuse to play with something new! Also, the camera looks impressive on the Pixel so would like to try it out.

I have not checked my card but as my initial order on the day the Pixel was announced last week provided me an XL on 24-26 October, I did not really consider whether the charge last week or next week made a lot of difference.

However I did note your delivery date in late November, ie 5 weeks from today. I believe that hints at very strong demand for the Pixel phones. I know manufacturers play games with supplies but with the ads that Google have carpeted all over London for example, I would not be surprised if the Pixel is one very hot selling phone and a smash hit.

The big issue I have with this phone is when it becomes faulty. I assume it needs to be sent back to HTC for repair? Or Google? If it's HTC their support is absolutely abysmal. I've had phones take weeks to repair with HTC. You don't mind accepting that when the phone is cheaper but it's the same price of an iPhone. The big selling point of Apple is support. Your iPhone is faulty and you pop in a store and it gets exchanged there and then no questions.

If you ever had problems with a nexus from Google then the returns/repair procedure was as good as it gets

Problems are when you buy from somewhere such as Carphone warehouse and they make you go through the manufacturer . Who then make you go through a uk repair centre that all the manufacturers use. And imo are awful

I've got a Pixel coming (hopefully soon) which might replace my S7E. I know it's a sidegrade really but the software on the S7E can be laggy and I won't see Nougat for months.

I hope soon for you too! Assuming you ordered through the Google Play Store (I have had great warranty coverage in the past), it depends on if you ordered early or more recently. Everything seems out of stock now on the Play Store Pixels with late November expected deliveries. The demand must surely be due to a combination of the Note 7 fiasco, the massive outdoor ad campaign in major cities and the ad on the Google Homepage.

Nothing to do with the lack of decent stock then?

Do you have the numbers?

So you think it is the old Apple switch and bait tactic? Huge demand due to no stock available? I would be surprised because I think there are some unique catalysts at work with Pixel, as cited: Google Homepage ad, carpet bombing ad tactic in major cities, tv and radio ad blitz, Note 7 fiasco----recent survey that 40% of Note 7 buyers say they will not buy a Samsung phone again and looking for the latest, hot Android phone.

So my bottom line on the situation: ad blitz and fortuitous event.

Without the actual numbers...all we can do is speculate.

Apple run out of stock due to monumental sales and are backed up by their numbers.

Sure, but speculation can be fun too! ;)

Meanwhile don't get me started about Apple's "monumental" sales and numbers. They have been living off the iPhone forever it seems and have had no other major product success since Steve Jobs left us. And while they are the most incredibly profitably company, their global market share of smartphones has declined to 12% (Android 86%).

12% vs 86% Yet they still make more money than Google. I sure wouldn't be upset.

Apple sell more smart watches than Android or atleast make more money doing so don't they?

Apple smart watch? Barely moves the needle. A flea on an elephant.

No, iPhone contributes between 65-70% of Apple's profits. They certainly struck gold there, no doubt about it.

Nothing else has moved the needle for Apple since the iPhone launch.

You misunderstood.

I meant Apple make more money selling smartwatches than Google do.

The market is tough for accessoires - yet Apple is making more money on them the anyone else.
