Goosebumps when listening to certain songs - explanation?

Currently re-watching it :D It's been many years since I watched the series, it was back in my college days in fact, so 2003~!

I ended up with the movie on blu-ray.

The result of this was that about a month ago I also ended up re-watching the series :D. I do hope they give that a blu-ray release someday to.

It's only been remastered so yeah, maybe a BD release one day, still, remastered is good enough!

Songs with a slow build up (crescendos) and then sudden releases of energy usually do this or songs with soaring guitar solos or epic vocal fade outs. More generally, songs with lots of dynamic range (composition wise). A few sublime examples:

Rosetta - A Determinism of Morality
Rosettta - Wake
Ahab - Old Thunder
ISIS - Garden of Light
Gojira - To Sirius
Atrox - What Crawls Underneath
Atrox - Unsummoned
Maudlin of the Well - Bizzare Flowers
Maudlin of the Well - Laboratories of Invisible World
Tool - Reflection
Tool - 10,000 Days

These songs give me goosebumps every time without fail. I really urge people to listen to the Ahab track I listed. Even if you don't like metal (doom metal no less), I'm positive that you'd appreciate the incredible sense of imagery this song evokes.

Seriously? That makes me want to hack my eyeballs out with ETs finger.

I concur.

Yarp, does it for me. I know the music I listen to is in the minority, that's part of it's appeal.

Like I said, I like fast punk. Not many people do, I'm sure those who do will understand where I'm coming from though.

Alternatively, these are another couple of tracks that evoke the same response from me.

Different strokes, for different folks.

When I had my 4-figure cost HiFi this could happen, but only because of how amazingly breathtaking songs I really liked sounded.

Same thing, or am I barking up the wrong tree? :p

No offence, but people who say this generally don't appreciate the music they listen to.

You could be listening to the song in horrific sound quality, but still the effect is the same.
The emotions are the same, the feelings and the whole experience.

Hey, this is a topic I've been concerned about ever since this first happening to me from my first experience. When listening to certain songs I usually get goosebumps/shivers but I have no idea how this occurs, I have asked other people on different forums if they have ever experienced this and they couldn't find an explanation. Me being lazy I haven't bothered to check Wikipedia for any answers but was wondering also if this happens to any of you guys and what actually makes it occur? I was told it was a result of something along the lines of listening to songs that you can relate to or a story that is being told within the song that relates to something happened.

I've had this all my life and it's the reason I started DJ'ing many years ago. Great thing about it... we are not meant to understand it but I keep seeking music that does exactly what you describe. Great isn't it?

Not just an average trance song. The buildup riff and drop to this song is unfathomably delicious. The bassline during the leadup gives me goosebumps every time without fail. Well worth the wait.

Just imagine at the 57 second mark you're just stepping into the club's main room...

... reach for the lasers... safe as ****

The Intros to Morrowind and Oblivion do this for me :D

Me too... swelling brass is supposed to have that effect. Jeremy Soule is very talented, lots of his game music is well composed and has an emotional aspect rather than just being audio 'filler' :)

I'm currently reading a book all about how our brains listen to music. It involves practically all of our brain, including the cerebellum and amygdala which are involved in emotions, and our memory centres so it can trigger emotional memories. That's probably the reason.

What book is that? Sounds very interesting.

As for the goosebumps, yes I get them all the time. Sometimes they can be very overwhelming, especially in the concert hall.

Don't know about that...

Pink Floyd's Great Gig in The Sky has brought a tear to many an eye to visitors in my house.

Expensive turntable based separates system brings out more of the music than an ipod!

Enjoy The Music!
