GordyR's Beginners Guide to Bodybuilding

Currently taking it easy after tweaking my shoulder (again) a couple of weeks ago. Been thinking about starting a 5X5 when I'm confident it's back to strength. There seem to be a lot about which vary a fair bit - anyone got a recommendation?

I'm doing this at the moment -

Workout A
Arnold Press
BOR's
Weighted Dips
Squats

Workout B
Deadlifts
Chins
Incline Bench
Power Clean to Push Press

Otherwise, have a look at some of Chad Waterbury's programs.

Ta - that looks pretty balanced. Some I looked at would've had me squatting maxes 3 times a week which I think would actually kill me (although may have earnt kudos points with Ken :)).

I'd forgotten how good the myprotein euro powder is. It blends so easily you can have it with anything. Ive had it with water and some lucozade energy powder, water and a sprinkle of sugar, and of course, with milk and chocolate nesquik :D

Certainly the best protein powder I've ever had, and at £30 for 4.5kgs...

Really? I always said if there was something smoother, I didn't want to know about it. Now I'm not so sure. I'd like like drinking proteinous silk...

Try the YMCA behind the guy in the biker outfit.

Alternativley man up and buy something decent

whats wrong with mutant mass

A few guys in the gym are using it and seems to be working ,they reckon it tastes good too unlike the isolate chocolate soya protein from holland & B which tastes horrid and mixes lumpy.

which one on that link do you recommend ,(Vege would be good)

its protein OF COURSE IT WORKS!! If you take maximuscle in the right quantities and train right you will get HUGE, it doesnt mean you SHOULD take maximuscle. Get WPC80 in as much bulk as you can afford. Stick whatever flavour nesquik you like in it. Oh and drink shakes more often the whole 'one after workout' thing annoys me

Shakes should be first thing in the morning, after training and before bed (assuming you dont do this already)

And remember, protein is PROTEIN, doesnt matter how many awards it wins or how many grade A scientists manufactured the patented "size-max" technology or whatever balls is on the tub. Get your protein, hit the gym hard and you'll succeed.

Sorry if im ranting aggressivley i think i need to deadlift!

Really random question guys

But do some people develop muscle a lot quicker and easier than others?

I've been going to the gym on and off for the last 3 years (on and off because I've been at uni so not always been able to afford it, settled in at home now though so been going solidly) and have a pretty good frame

Now for the last 6 months or so, I've decided to up the weights and get some muscle to show for the hard work. Now my friend from college has been doing weights a lot longer than I have and does a far more intense work out than me (higher weights etc) yet he doesnt seem to be making nearly as much progress as I am

Since starting I've gotten quite good visible results especially with my biceps and pectorals, yet, while you can tell he's a gym go'er he still doesnt look like someone who puts as much effort in as he does

So just got me wondering if different people progress at different speeds in regards to muscle building?

The answer is yes and no. Genetics plays an important role in muscle growth but so does training type, nutrition, dedication and factors like rest and recuperation. You are seeing the effects of beginner gains. You will develop muscle quite fast for between 6months to a year of training. The chances are your friend is guilty of one of a few common mistakes. Poor Diet, poor variation in training plans, poor form in key compound exercises, over training of muscle groups, failing to control intensity.

There probably isnt a lot of genetic difference between you, although if you are comparable to him after a relatively short training period you may have a biological advantage. If i was to bet money on whats going on, your mate thinks he knows all there is to know about training, he knows his reps and his exercises inside out and he repeats them week on week year on year, not taking proper breaks in case his hard earned muscle vanishes. His diet is **** poor apart from the odd protein shake. Its a common tale and almost certainly true going by what you have described.
