GordyR's Beginners Guide to Bodybuilding

Hmm ok, I don't particularly like them, so just try and get it down in one go. But I shall modify this! Not that I want to put on too much more weight particularly..bear in mind I've never been over 10.5 stone in my entire life until now!

What shake did you use to gain a stone in a month?

Was it a weight gainer?

Banging in extra calories won't automatically give you an extra stone of muscle.

It's very unlikely/impossible that all that stone mansize put on is muscle. The majority of it I would imagine would be fat/bloating and from generally having that much food in you!

Whilst it's for certain mansize was getting enough nutrition (carbs anyway :p) it's training and resting that will build muscle.

Diet is probaly the largest courner stone followed by training and rest. All important.

Haha indeed, 95% of that stone was probably fat. But it certainly made my workouts more energetic and I feel it actually helped me in the long run because I'd been running on empty for months before that. At the very least, it was a fun experiment. In fact, I think it was more like 18lbs I put on in total within the space of 4 or 5 weeks.

Yeah, it's always good when you're bulking as you have that peice of mind you're body is getting enough nutrition and it's not 'wasted' effort.

Any of you guys tried out "SCI-MX 100% PURE WHEY PROTEIN POWDER" ?

If so can i have your thoughts on it please. Just bought 2.4KG for £31 after reading a few reviews, thought i may as well try it out for that price.

Thanks

11.8 stone now, closing in on 12 at a rate of knots!

I'm not even actively trying to put weight on any more, just lifting lots.

Must be working. Keep it up!

There's a supplements discussion thread you might find some useful information in there/be better asking in there.

Hi guys! Just wondering if you could offer some advice on my plans that I'm starting to follow. Couple of points I want to make though:

1. Dinners can change - if I can find a suitable, easy to make alternative. Young professional student here :p Eventually I'll want to eat more and more but right now, I'm starting at the shallow end.

2. Barbells - probably the biggest letdown. Everyone I know that goes to the gym doesn't go to the heavy weights section downstairs in the basement. On ground floor the free weight dumbbells go to 10KG. I go down there myself but just use dumbbells - being as skinny as I am and with hardcore bodybuilders down there, they're not going to spot a skinny kid on the 2 racks they have which are busy a lot of the time. Had a couple of not very nice people telling me to go back upstairs

Would be willing to change gym if I had mates that go to the same gym in London and want to achieve what I want to achieve - more mass! Mates all end up going onto resistance machines rather than free weights even though I've tried to tell them of the benefits and persuade them.

Many thanks for your help guys, wish there was an OCUK gym because it would be full of friendly people! :)

Some forum members may be able to offer you better advice than me as I have only started training again in the last couple of months. I think my first point would be to ignore what those people at your gym are saying, if you've paid to use the equipment then you have every right to do so. I'd also add in deadlifts to your back/bicep day and leave the biceps till last if you are doing it in the order listed.
Your diet looks good! In fact i've just added some things to my food shop list from looking at that. Maybe a bit of variation can help, bolognaise, chilli, soups and stews, pittas filled with chicken or turkey.

Hi $loth, cheers for the reply!

Yes, I do try and ignore the idiots but with none of my mates going down into the basement to work out (and I've tried to drag them along) I'm kind of limiting myself without bench pressing with barbells and so on I guess...

Thanks for the tip, i'll try and incorporate deadlifts into my routine!

Wow, I'm impressed I've managed to help you on the food shop! If you need any more info about how I do things, let me know! Monday, weds and fri dinners are brilliant to make - come home from the gym, protein shake, shove all food in the steamer, hit the shower, and by the time I'm finished it's all cooked! :)

For the lasagne, ingredients as follows:

lean mince
onion
basil
oregano
bouillon
black pepper
chopped tomato
tomato puree
cottage cheese
wholewheat lasagne sheets
+ add veg as you like

:-)

I am going to try and vary it once I find some good, easy recipes! :D

Right I decided to bite the bullet and ordered some more portein purely as a dietary supplement. Living at home, coming back from uni, doesn't give me as much control over my diet as I tend to eat with the family.

I should know this by now but I'm assuming the best two times to take it are directly after a workout (assuming a meal is eaten 1-2 hours before) and before going to sleep (as to supply a healthy dose of protein before rest). Is this correct? Or could you split the same dose into 4 servings; first thing in the morning, before workout, after workout and before sleeping. I haven't used protein for ages as at uni I eat a ridiculous amount of chicken!

whey is fast absorbing so tends to be used pre/post workout and upon waking, a slower release protein tends to be used more at night eg casein (god it tastes like sand though) personally I prefer to have cottage cheese at night.

Right I see. So I take it cottage cheese is a slow-releasing protein.

The protein I've ordered is Maximuscle Promax which is supposed to be very quick releasing. So would my best option be to consume it prior and post workout and then stick to cottage cheese before sleeping, unless there's a superior/cheaper alternative?

Cheers

Really useful thread.. Ive got a question though.

Im currently trying to lose some fat, and am going to the gym first thing in the morning. You seem to advocate not eating before working out for optimum fat loss, I have also read the complete opposite in other places. Is there something Im missing? Is perhaps a sort of compromise the best way of doing it? ie, a couple of bits of fruit on the way to the gym then breakfast when I get back home?

Pretty sure its to not eat in the morning before a cardio work out. I would definately have some sort of food before hitting the gym for a weights work out in the morning!

If you're working out with weights, definitely eat beforehand. If doing cardio and you feel you'd go longer whilst fueled then I'd eat before that too.

Yes, although you may not actually need to supplement with extra protein pre and post workout, as for cheaper alternatives if you want just protein I imagine casein based protein is cheaper per g protein than cottage cheese (Be warned, myprotein bags I've tried taste horrible though).
