On friday me and a mate went to an Asda in Nottingham (greenway or green something) We went to pay for the alcohol we bought and were asked for ID. Neither or us had any so my mate had to drive 30minutes back to his house to get it. He is 24 and I am 25 in 2 months. We look around 25, certainly not 18.

After getting annoyed and kicking up a bit of a fuss our stuff was put into a trolley and a 'runner' took it away until my mate returned with ID. When he got back we called for the runner and had to queue up again and pay for our stuff...

Now here's the stupid part. When we paid the woman on the till said sorry about that and didnt even ask for the ID! My mate then stormed off and asked for the store manager and made a complaint.

Fair enough if we get asked for ID if we dont look 25, but to make one of us drive home to get it, then not even ask for it is just stupid and very annoying

Anyone else been asked for ID? I read something in the paper a while ago about an 80 something year old guy who was asked for it

*waits for the usual crowd to defend this stupid ID rule*

Being asked for ID when the staff clearly "know" that you are over 18 is just stupid :/

So, you got asked for ID in Hyson Green, arguably one of the more troublesome areas of the city.. whoop de doo..

It happens, and to be honest, with the way that licensing is being clamped down upon, it is more likely that the first cashier was following the store rules to the letter, the second was using common sense.

Chalk it up to experience and move on.

I don't find why it's an issue.

If you have a wallet then most people will have their driving license in it.

It would be annoying if you clearly were older than 18/21 and you had forgotten to bring ID, yes it would be annoying... but the people asking are supposed to, so it's not entirely their fault.

Your mate drove for 30mins back to his house, then 30mins back? Wouldn't it have made much more sense to just drive to another store?

Tell me about it. My Nan, she's in her late 90s, got refused service of a bottle Brandy a while back because she didn't have any ID on her, and after making her look for some they wouldn't accept her bus pass as ID.

Why were you forced to go home to retrieve the ID if they didn't look at it?

Should have said "yes" when they asked if you had ID and carried on.

You're buying alcohol you take your id what's hard about that :/

Stores not going to risk the crippling loss of it's license because a few people are too dim to remember their id's.

I don't blame the stores really, I've seen a few 16 & 17 year olds who look like they are 23-24, the store doesn't want huge fines or to lose their licence. Waste of time though if they didn't even look at it, but if it was me by that point I'd have gone my nearest off licence

lol yeh that's rather stupid, but the woman apologised to you and you don't have to be the brightest person to know someone wouldn't drive 30 minutes home and come back with id (who also looks 25) who isn't at least 18. That's probably why she didn't ask you for the id a 2nd time because it might have annoyed you guys even more. She will ask the next person for id.

When I was with a friend of mine who's nearly 40 he got ID'd and couldn't get served, sometimes these people on the tills should use their damn common sense.

sounds like you are the muppet tbh. Most stores have a look 25 policy now so is it really worth her risking trouble on a sub 10quid an hour job?

Lady was probably tired and ****holes like you giving her grief may of really upset her, I hope you are happy with yourselves.

They wont lose the license if they don't ask for ID ... problems would only occur if they sell to under 18s though.
What needs to happen is that discretion is applied.

If only there was some sort of card that could be used to verify your ID and age. A bit like a driving licence but for people who haven't passed their test too.
