Really? I thought hatchback meant the shape of the rear of the car and how the boot works.

Learn something new every day.

As to your 'correcting' me regarding the ST, Fox's car is a Mondeo, the ST220 is a Mondeo. Ergo the ST220 is a faster version. If you want to argue over semantics feel free but nothing I said was factually incorrect.

[edit]I also don't see why a Golf isn't in the same class as the ST220.

Yes the hatchback is a name given to a certain style of boot opening. It is also a name given to such cars that can only come in hatchback form, ie the near vertical rear of the car.

Fox's car is a Mk2 Mondeo, the ST220 is a Mk3 Mondeo, totally different cars. It like me comparing a 1.3 Mk1 Golf to a Mk5 Golf GTI. The fast version of Fox's car was the ST200, same chassis etc.

The Passat is in the Mondeo class, the Golf is not a saloon style car. This is excluding the estate version. Also if the Golf was in the same class as the Mondeo, surely Skoda would not have to use a stretched version of the Golf chassis for the Octavia.

Just on a side note, you do realise the Golf GTi is only 6.4cm longer then CTR? It is also shorter then the Focus ST and only 3cm longer then the Focus RS. The Golf GTi is also shorter then the Astra VXR by 8.6cm.

There's still nothing in your post to make me think differently. The Golf is closer in class to the Mondy than proper hot hatches.

There's no point continuing. I'm not going to change my mind about thinking the Golf is more a lukewarm family car than a hot hatch and its gone on long enough now.

CTR
Length 4140 mm
Width 1695 mm
Height 1440 mm

Golf GTi
Length 4204 mm
Width 1759 mm
Height 1485 mm

Mondeo
Length 4731 mm
Width 1812 mm
Height 1429 mm

Hmm lets look there. Now im sure you dont need good maths to be able to see that infact the Golf is closer to the CTR then the Mondeo.

Didn't I tell you to leave it? Thought so. its off topic and you're boring me never mind anyone else.

You didnt accually specify that is must stop in post 63 though. You just said that there was no point in carrying on, i saw a point so hense why i replied. I agree it is slightly off topic, which is why i am going to stop now.

Nice Car, How much did it cost ?

Hi just thought i would post some pics of our new car we picked up yesterday. Its been a long wait, we ordered the original car on Aug 1st last year. Three day before we were due to pick the original car up Audi released the Special edition 2.0T model which had some of the extras we had specced but worked out £1700+VAT cheaper. We had to reorder another car as they wouldn't match the price so I used the money saved to add the nav and bluetooth which we didnt spec originally :D (The nav unit is superb I have 4gb of mp3s in there on two sd cards)

Its a A3 sportback 2.0T Quattro S-line. Will get some better pics soon but here it is anyway.

28k!! wooo, thats a lot of money to spend on a car, any reason you picked that above a 350z or many of the other fantastic cars that are available for that kind of money? and if it had to be a bigger car, prey tell, why the 2.0T audi?

I think that was done to death 5 months ago when he bought it and I think he's had enough of people like me saying things like 'why didnt you buy an A4' or whatever, so we won't go through it again :p

Very nice looking car fella, though not what I'd go for myself. How's the handling on it, much understeer at all?

The CTR is the only hothatch you've mentioned :p

You don't think the Golf GTI is a hot hatch? What about the Astra VXR, the Focus ST and the Megane 225 then, do you not class them as hot hatches either? ;)

In what way is a 350Z "better"? For me, the best car is not just the one that gets to 60 fastests for the money. Mind you, the 350Z does seem a very nice car. :)

I'm also intrigued as to what an A4 has over this car and why that would be fine for £28k but the A3 is seen as expensive?

Two door cars werent an option we were looking at as are getting married this year and if we were spending so much on a car the plan is to keep it for a long time and a lot of that time we plan on our kids using it.

The A4 doesnt really offer thet much more room than the sportback, infact the sportback has more rear passenger space than the last model A4(B5) does(it looses on some boot space though). My other half also prefered a hatchback although that wasn't the make or brake of it. We looked at quite a few cars and the A3 stood out, it makes the BMW 1 series seem rubbish and that was the other main car were looking at. Although we did only look at the 120D and 118s as the 130 wasnt out at the time. Its also seems a much smaller car and feels a bit cramped especially in the rear.

The A3 is an expensive car and i have added every feature I wanted to ours as I dont want to be wishing id only paid a few hundred more for that at a later date. Even if I specc up a similar Golf GTI it comes out to about £27.5k(list) and they dont have a lot of the options that the Audi does and the Audi is finished much better than the Golf is.

I havent been ragging the car yet but from how I have been driving it the handling is spot on, it could do with a little more feedback through the steering wheel but I will sort that when my VAG-COM arrives. The ride is fairly stiff on the S-Lines and you can feel bumps in the road(something some people don't like, thats why the SE is in the range though) but I like it. Its only on P-Zero Rossos but seems to stick to the road like glue and doesnt have any body roll, the only reason you know you are going around the corner so quick is feeling from the seat holding you in place. The brakes are fantastic too, ive got mintex C-Tech discs and pads on my T4 and the A3 standard brakes have much more feel and bite than those and the T4 stops you like you've dropped an anchor(they are slightly smaller though on the T4 and with smaller tyres) .
