GPU dead or something else?

Hi guys,

My system has decided to die and I'm fairly sure the gpu has died unless others can think otherwise.

I fired up Armed Assault 3 and once in game the gpu fan ramped right up to full (which is unusual) then the system went blank.
Attempted to restart to no avail.
The system starts, I get a single beep but no display and the gpu fan is at full constantly still.

I've tried reseating the gpu and changing the pci-e power cables to no avail.
Any further ideas to troubleshoot or is the gpu likely dead?

If so, what is a suitable replacement for a 7950?
(200 max).

Please excuse spelking/grammar, on my phone.

is your pc overclocked? tried a cmos/mb battery left out for 30 minutes then try?

idk if you have onboard graphics but tried booting with those?

What board is it?

Does it have another PCI-E port you can swap the card to?

Have you tried clearing resetting the bios via the jumper (if it has one), flipping the battery out is ok if you have it disconnected from the mains and the PSU is totally drained down, but sometimes it's best to switch the jumper to, or leave it for a while.

Have you tried swapping the PCIE power connectors to see if a rail has gone bad?

Pop the card out and clean the pins with a pencil eraser and re-seat it along with checking power connectors and or changing them.

It might be worth mentioning that my Gigabyte Z68 AP-D3 has been causing me major issues recently. My Pc randomly goes into a boot loop sequence. Cannot go near any overclock of any type. And only a cmos reset works to resolve it. I would try source a different GPU or try yours in another system. And just see if it isnt the board first dude.
Very cheap and not a very reliable board tbh.

Up until now, mine has been solid even with an over clock.
Unfortunately I have no other systems to be able to test the gpu on.

Is there any other tests I can try to pin it down?

This isn't a troubleshooting solution, but you asked what gpu would replace a 7950, and the answer is a R9 280. It basically IS a 7950, and it costs about £200.
If you can stretch the budget, then an R9 280X costs another £20-£40 and is essentially a rebranded 7970Ghz edition.

Gigabyte ga-z68ap-d3

Tried all you mentioned, still the same.
Starts up, single post beep and gpu fan at max.

Hmm not sure then other than swapping out bits like other people have said.

Did you check the voltage on the PCIE connectors with a volt meter from the PSU while they are off of the card?

No I've not tried a volt meter, which pins would I need to check and what should the expected reading be?
I would be surprised if it's the PSU, my last one blew after 3+ years use.
The current replacement (XFX) is barely 6 months old.
