GPU paste

Having recently replaced the fan on my 4890, use something decent like artic silver and triple make sure it has proper contact with the heatsink. I learn't the hard way!

LOL at those recommending Arctic Silver on a GPU.

You have to be especially careful when using a conductive material on a piece of hardware like a GPU, you run the risk of killing it if you get it anywhere on the PCB or make a mess, which a lot of people do.

You're best off using MX-2 or MX-3, or any other non-conductive matierial unless you know 100% what you're doing or have previous experience in doing so. Wouldn't want some newb to come along and void his warrenty because he decided to slap AC5 on his GPU and kill it in the process.

AS5 is either conductive or capacitive. Considering the size of the GPU and the small componants right next to it I would avoid using it.

MX-3 would be my suggestion.

To the above poster, there is no difference between GPUs and CPUs.

????

Been using Artic silver on CPU's and GPUs for years no probs here.
Didnt the artic silencers used to come with Artic silver 5?

The NV3 uses the 4 small mounting holes around the 5900XT GPU, before you can install it you have to remove the original cooler of course. We used a Chaintech 5900XT for comparison which comes equipped with a high performing (and loud) cooler and also sports flashy memory heatsinks. In our review of this graphics card here we replaced the default thermal paste with Arctic Silver 5.

I know tons of people who use this on GPU's and CPU's and no probs from them too. I dont just post recommendations for the fun of it, been using Artic silver with no probs on GPU's and still will tbh.

Do that to an ATI chip and you will kill it.

Sorry mate youve lost me, my mate is using my old 9800 pro with AS5 and my ex g/fs 4850 has AS5 on it too, both working fine

If your on about it could do some damage if it goes where it shouldnt do then people are being very cack handed on a pretty easy job tbh :)

You have been using arctic silver on Nvidia GPUs with heatspreaders.

Do that to an ATI chip and you will kill it.

There is a theoretical chance of that happening but I always used AS5 and other pastes on ATI cards and never had a problem.

Have you actually had this happen?

I am interested to know as I have always used AS on GPUs with no problem so far. If there is a chance though I will steer clear from now on.

Problem with using AS5 on ati cards is the closeness of other chips to the main gpu. I have seen people put a bit too big a blob of AS5 in the center of the gpu and when the head sink is bolted down the paste spreads and leaks out of the gpu area.. Next thing you know is you have a nice little short circut :)

If you don't go mad with the AS5 you'll be fine but as already said some people put too much on and get it on other components.

Personally I use MX-3 on everything these days and if any thing get better temps than AS5.
