GPU prices go boom

Its like they are on a self destruct mission. I have a nice 4k tv and a 4k monitor. My 980Ti can play some games in 4k but honestly to replace it would cost £650-£700+ which is crazy. Xbox One X £400-£450+ 4k gaming, 4k Blu-ray and it looks good. The current pricing of mid to top range graphics cards, not to mention memory, my 16Gb DDR4 cost me £82 a year ago and is now £209.99, I think I may have built my last gaming Pc I'm sad to say. Will give it till summer and if prices are the same then I'm out.

Its still an console that can only play games movies and do internet. People are forgetting that OCs are not only for gaming.
I produce videos on mine from my gopro. And got VR porn and pays my bills.

But if one uses pc only for gaming **** id get xbone x + 4k lg oled and habe epic picture since still mo ******* oled monitors on market...

I have no idea when I'm going to be able to afford a GPU upgrade.

I purchased a used 980ti a year ago with a waterblock as an upgrade the a 970, prices are just crazy... 1080 is like £500, and that's barely even a noticeable upgrade tbh!

my monitor is a 120hz 1080p job, with only dual link DVI inputs and my cpu is a 4790k, so I think I'll just try and get as much use of the rig as it is, then get brand new shinny stuff all round in 3 or 4 years or so :)

Yup, you're best off holding out with that Ti (which are still reallllllly good cards!), lower a few details as and when you have to. Hell, even medium settings now and games look great

Most console gamers have a PC/laptop for productivity. That almost goes without saying. Even non-gamers have a cheap Dell PC to Photoshop on :p

The choice for gamers these days is to pay $$$$ to keep upgrading their PC (getting ever more expensive) or to buy a console every 5 years and play games without the worry instead.

When a single component (GPU) costs more than the best console on the market, it's not hard to see why PC gamers are letting their PCs stagnate, putting the money they would have spent on upgrades into a console instead.

The argument that "a PC can do so much more!" is really only relevant to people who have neither a PC nor a console, and how many people is that, exactly? A handful?

Its a nightmare trying to get a good gfx card for 1440 these days, anything i see with a semi decent price is out of stock.
Only a few months back i made the move to 1440 from 1080 and im kinda sorry i did.
My rig was close to perfect for 1080P gaming, i then saw a decent deal for the dell 27" gsync 144hz monitor that i couldnt refuse, i thought hey ill buy it and get a gfx card to do it justice down the road then maybe a new build that wouldnt be so hard on the wallet as i would then have a nice monitor and gpu..

My rig is an i5 2500K oced to 4,4ghz and a gtx 970, yes it plays games fine with 90+ fps when i turn settings down to medium and some on low.
I cant lose that nagging feeling i might have been better off just sticking with 1080P gaming for a bit longer, my rig was running my 24" gsync 144hz screen close to 144fps all the time with high/ultra settings, now im stuck in this frustrating circle of high GPU prices thanks to these god damn miners.

Rant over.

Had the exact same cpu/gpu/monitor setup, definitely felt like a cart before the horse thing. Glad i got my Ti when I did.

My 480 copes with 1440 fine, went from 1200. Sure new games may struggle a little more but extra ppi and screen size is worth it.

Also just because you have a 144hz monitor doesn't mean you must have 144fps.

i'm still on a 970 for 1440p and its holding up ok.
I won't be buying again until a 1070 is £300 or less -i guess i'm going to be waiting a while.

Personally I'd wait for the new **70 line to be announced and make an order as *soon* as it's up on pre-order. Sorted then with 1080+ performance for not too much money (hopefully!). You may have to wait a little because of the (manic) miners but a few weeks at most.

Just make that 970 last just a bit longer imo.

Depends on how much you value your video gaming as a hobby.

For me it's my primary hobby. I prefer to play a video game than sit down and watch TV or listen to music. It's a social thing for me as I chat with friends from all over the globe whilst messing about online.

I think if you put countless hours into your video games then the cost of entry for PC gaming starts to become more justified.

If gaming is just another thing you enjoy but perhaps it takes a back seat to watching your favourite movies or TV shows then perhaps a console is more suitable.

Since I built my first PC in 2012 I have collected 98 games on Steam and most of them have 20+ hours of game time in them. About 10 of those games have reached 200+ hours.

For me the price for components does feel expensive and I can see why people might consider getting out of it but long term I still believe it represents value.

Yes but 95% of the games on Steam don't need anything more than a mid range card.

My £250 xfx rx480 gtr xxx still handles everything I throw at it with decent fps. Then when I'm done with it, I can sell it for a profit to some miner :p

But yea it's getting silly. They should start selling dedicated compute cards I think. That would enable them to make profit from miners while lowering GPU prices.

We stopped getting value for money before the mining craze shortages causing inflation (this is however why its worse than its ever been, even 2nd hand market is poop).
It all started with this last series 10XX not replacing its 9XX counterpart pricewise but replacing the card it performed the same as for the same price, for example the Gtx 1060 performs close to the 970 and costs the same instead of the 1070 being near the same price.
Really want to upgrade my i5 2500k 4.5ghz GTX 970 build but the money is stupid, I'm also tempted to just spend the money on a Xbox one X and leave pc gaming (until my set up no longer runs games) and save a few bob, especially when the Xbox eventually gets keyboard and mouse support.

***PS***
Still kicking myself for not buying a GTX980ti when OCUK where selling old stock at £299 Dammit!

When do you think the bet time to sell your old card and buy a new one is? After cards/prices have been announced and cards benchmarked but not released, then as soon as cards are available and before the miners have bought them all?

I'm in the market to sell my 980ti and block if i can make the upgrade work price wise...
