GPU prices go boom

Let me explain it in the simplest terms a 'hobby' is a leisure pursuit.... It's not completely incompatible to make money from a 'hobby' but if you have 10+ GPU's mining and the market for mined currency tanks don't tell me that you are going to continue with your activities regardless ergo it isn't a hobby so stop with your ridiculous justification..... Accept that you are involved in a ponzi style get rich quick scheme (which will inevitably lead to lots of people losing lots of money) and stop trying to claim that its some noble, useful enterprise you are engaged in or that it's even a 'hobby' because it's not and your only deluding yourself if you think that it is

Why do some people believe that the pursuit of profit is immoral?

People believe this because corporations often greedily externalize costs. By this, I mean that corporations will cause damages that, if not curbed or controlled by external forces, will be incurred by people who did not participate in the transaction.

Well, so much wrong in this post. I don't mine, I have no interest in it. Computer gaming and graphic cards are a hobby, now people find out they can make money from their hobby and a lot of people having taking the opportunity to do so.

You are woefully ignorant if you think mining is a get rich quick scheme. And it ain't no Ponzi scheme either. It's actually growing. Businesses are already using blockchain for supply chains. It's not all about mining. There is so much more to it. You should read up about the first major agricultural trade doing using blockchain.

And people losing money? Who? Maybe people making bad investments, but that's true of speculating on anything in the stock exchange. Miners won't lose lots of money, maybe a few stupid miners who didn't approach the whole thing sensibly. But most miners only buy new hardware with money made from hardware they own already. Who are these "lots"???

I don't think he's talking about people that are gamers and making a bit of profit on the side as a hobby using their existing hardware, but those that are driving by solely with profit in mind, and deplete the supplies on the market because of building "mining farms".

I'm not sure if you are aware of the milk-powder scandal in China a few years back, where there was a huge issue with safety of the milk-powder/formula milk...and as a result, population of China try was desperate in buying foreign brand imported milk-powder/formula milk. So what happened was there was a huge rise profiteers basically buying up all the foreign milk-powder/formula milk in the nearby places such as Hong Kong, and reselling for a profit. Everyday citizen couldn't get milk-powder/formula milk for their kids because of the profiteers have completely depleted the all the supply on the market.

The situation with the current graphic card market is a bit similar, in the sense that pure gamers cannot get graphic card for PC gaming without paying insane price, because the full-blown coin-farmers with only profit in mind don't really care about the averse effect they are causing the gaming community, as all they care about is profit for themselves. But I guess it is just human nature to be self-serving first and foremost, and don't really care about other people that they don't know all that much.

And I wasn't talking about those people who are making massive mining farms, those people who are about making money at the expense of everything else exist in all areas of life. It's not just unique to mining. Throughout this whole thread, miners are all been tarred with the same brush. Miners are greedy, miners are running the environment, miners wouldn't **** on you if you were on fire etc. Most miners are just normal people making a bit of money on the side from their hobby.

And comparing a resource that people need to live to the shortage of GPUs is ridiculous. And it's not even remotely similar, Miners are buying the cards, but, they aren't profiteering from the shortage of cards. Look at the price of the GTX 1080 cards. They aren't good for mining, almost every other card in the Nvidia lineup is better. And yet look at the prices of those cards right now and they are in stock everywhere. Whose guilty of profiteering there? It's not miners that's for sure.

If Nvidia and AMD, retailers are all so caring for the gaming community why don't they do something about it? They don't want to do anything about it because they are making money out of it. There is lots of stock available of 1060s, 1080s, 1050s, 1050ti, 1060 mini, everywhere.

I haven't read through the entire thread, but when you quoted Caracus2k, I thought you were responding to his calling out of people that are actual farmer with 10+ GPUs example?

I don't know why you are so annoyed by Caracus2k's post, as you said you are talking about something else when the people he's referring to (full-blown farmer) and the people that you are referring to (gamers mine on the side) are not the same.

Easiest way to solve this little problem is to step away from it I think. What I currently have will tide me over until all this nonsense passes.

I'd like to upgrade to Ryzen but at the current Ddr4 prices I'll pass and the 980ti is good enough to game on most titles.

It's a shame really but as others have said most of this is wants rather than needs.

Ryzen isn't an upgrade to the 4670k. I made hop and found it to be generally waste of money (no fps improvements, start up times are longer, even after meltdown).
Your 980 TI is about 1070 levels of fps. Again, no improvement for you unless you get a 1080+ (but what games are you looking to play that needs that power at the moment?).

I’m stuck in the middle now as today I’ve just bought some new hardware but can’t make my mind up on what card to buy.

I think if I can’t find a pair of 980Ti cards to SLI then I’ll have to go ahead and order a 1080/Ti.

I see Nvidia have the 1080FE priced @ £529 but it’s always out of stock.

Wouldn't bother with a pair of 980ti's personally. I have been there and the performance wasn't worth the heat and power draw. Granted this was on a micro atx board so they were stacked right ontop of each other. This was also at a time when I got them both for £430, you'd be looking at 600+ right now!

I had a pair of 980Ti cards a few months ago and swapped to a single 1080Ti, then sold that on as i bought an iMac, now i want to game again i have to buy all over again :p I really liked my 980Ti in SLI though, it was great, fast enough for any games i played.

Thought it would be good if i could pick up a couple for £200 each or close enough but i'm not paying £300 for a second hand 980Ti!

I shudder to think of the people who are buying cards at current prices just to game.

If anybody pays the current prices for a 1060 or higher GPU, then quite frankly they deserve to be ripped off because if they're stupid enough to pay it, retailers are smart enough to sell it.

Pc gamers can be their own worst enemy sometimes, this desire to always have shiny new tech opens them up to the current abuse thats taking place.
