I've probably spent a total of 50 hours gaming on it too.
But 8760 hours mining on it.

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

Both those companys make money from selling/licensing graphics hardware. I expect they have there fingers in other pies, but this is a massive source of income for them. All this tech relies on traditional GPUs.What I don't understand is why Nvidia/ATI are not rushing to try and take advantage of the mining craze. Why have either of them not released a card that is better for compute/low memory latency tasks, with high efficiency per watt. It wouldn't have to be gtx 1070/rx 580 power - as long as its profitable per watt then miners would love it.

The hardware your suggesting allready exists. Its called an ASIC miner. Its 100% specificaly designed for mining crypto currency and pretty much cannot do anything else.
ASIC Bitcoin mining systems can solve Bitcoin blocks much quicker and use less power than older bitcoin mining hardware like CPUs, GPUs or FPGAs. There are a number of companys selling ASIC systems, so there is lots of competion.
There is not much competition between GPU companies.
I've looked at that source but can't see how it comes from Nvidia. The chap who's giving details on pricing appears to be a B.Hutch who's a buying manager for MassDrop, rather than some kind of Nvidia insider....unless of course I'm being monumentally thick and missing something obvious. This guy hasn't said anything new that Gibbo hasn't already mentioned.Nvidia are saying prices will continue to rise through Q3 2018.

Even if Nvidia didn't say anything directly we pretty much know the situation of near future unless something very dramatic is going to happen.I've looked at that source but can't see how it comes from Nvidia. When Ethereum moves to a Proof-of-stake model with the Casper Protocol, it'll make mining rigs obsolete as these Rigs will no longer be able to generate streams of revenue from Ethereum mining as it won't require the complicated hashing power of GPUs. This is excepted to happen within 2-3 years.
AMD/Nvidia know this, therefore the current craze you see jut now with GPU's will inevitably come to an end.
Agree wholeheartedly with this, they could drop prices but don't and continue to enjoy fat profits in the meantime, they seem to be ignoring the small matter of long time pc gamers getting wholly fed up with this state of affairs and walking away from the hobby.NVidia are full of animal waste.
Yes memory shortage and price has had an effect on the final price of a GPU card.
But if you remember NVidia cards are very overpriced to start with and the vendor is raking off a very big profit margin. NVidia could quite easily take a little bit of a hit on their margins and absorb the extra cost of memory chips without passing it onto the end user and still make a healthy profit.
If AMD were more competitive high end NVidia cards would be £200 cheaper regardless of any memory chip shortage.

My nephew messaged me the other day asking his options for upgrading his GTX 970 based rig with a healthy £1k budget, I told him to forget PC gaming and enjoy an Xbox 1 X and 4k tv instead, which he's done, he's selling his old rig and is planning on scooping up a load of games for it from CEX with the proceeds.
Having convinced him to go from his PS3 to PC gaming, he's now priced out of the market and going back to console, he won't be back.....
That's a bit OTT in my opinion. He could have picked up a range of second-hand upgrades from his 970 that would keep him in the current game. My 980Ti rig works very well and outperforms the current generation of consoles in every area. In fact, the 970 could probably outperform them too.
Exactly, he’d seen my twin 1070’s and 4K tv and wanted some of the action, I said it would cost him so he thought £1k would be more than enough for a better 4K capable GPU, some more RAM,and 4K screen (most likely a large TV as I’ve got) to go with it.Not if his nephew wants to play at 4K
