As the title!

Currently playing on 1080p hoping to move up to a 1440p 60Hz display in the next few months.

I’m doing a full system refresh ( new mobo/CPU/RAM) probably with a Ryzen 3600 at the centre.

The GPU market is a bit mad right now and I’m leaning towards an Nvidia card because although the AMD cards in this price bracket have plenty of power, I don’t want to be suffering with the issues that are so prevalent.

I’m really torn between a ‘cheaper’ 2070 or an OC 2060 super for the same price.

Any advice or opinions is most welcome!

guessing current monitor is 1080p and 60hz ? new monitor your looking into- freesync ones would be cheaper and come in around 75hz+ which is great for gaming . There are G-sync capable freesync monitors too which cut down the price a little .

and then at 1440p ryzen closely matches intel in performance

AMD side - along with 2 free games and X Box Game pass for 3 months

£300
My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £309.89 (includes shipping: £9.90)

rx 5700xt for a little more (Gigabyte is the best all rounder gpu)
£360

BB CODE
My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £720.48 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Nvidia - sits in the middle of RX 5700 and 5700 xt, but closer to 5700 then 5700 XT

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £350.89 (includes shipping: £9.90)

5700 or keep eye out for a discounted 5600 should be great for your needs.

This 2060 though is not a bad price if your welded to nvidia, not sure it would cut 1440p. Super variety all seem to be well north of £300 on OcUK which puts me off.

XFX 5700XT THICC III goes for £351 these days. Has one of the best coolers out there, in par to the most expensive Nitro. Is faster than those two above and all the cards mentioned above in this price range. (go search for THICC III not II, reviews).

I do genuinely try not to buy into internet hypes but there are a lot of horror stories around about the 5700 XT. Are things more stable now in terms of drivers?

Look if you plan to
  • not use DDU to wipe previous drivers in windows safe mode.
  • insist using PCIe riser cable on 4.0 mode when none PCIe riser cable supports 4.0
  • use AMD bios other than X570 and not set explicitly PCIe 3.0 leaving it to auto
  • insist on using daisy chain power cable because "the PSU has it so is fine" argument
  • buy an Evoce or Pulse
  • try to use DP cable for 1440p that is not DP1.4 HBR compliant but some cheap 1.0-1.1 crap came with the monitor
  • use MSI AB which doesn't support Adrenaline 2020 drivers. That needs to be removed first from the system.
don't buy one.
Otherwise you shouldn't have an issue.

I had 0 issues with my 5700XT AE since bought it in July.

This is all great to know. It'll basically be on a clean install as my current copy of Windows 10 is tied to my mobo ( I think) and I'm planning to do the upgrade all in one go.

The power of the 5700 XT for the price certainly is tempting.

What makes AMD cards more appealing is Freesync screens being half the price of G-sync ones, with Freesync + G-sync compatible ones being slightly more for the extra quality to meet Nvidia standards .

Key thing is to have a monitor which complements the card and can handle a few GPU upgrades. Nothing worse then seeing a £300-1k GPU on a 1080p 60hz screen.... :/

Try to get one with a higher refresh rate. Even 75 Hz makes a big difference.

TBH I'd much rather go 1080p and 120,144,165 or 240hz than 1440p and 75hz.

Unless you don't play competitive fps.

Also if you think gpu prices are high it's best to just stick to 1080p also as you can then still buy really cheap card which will play everything really well.
