GPU upgrade made my fps worse??

try a different driver version, 275's are good, 280's are new so might be fail.
Got more than one PCI-E 16x slot, try the other one.
Post a screenie of MSI afterburner (temps, load and clocks) from desktop use and during gaming (just alt tab to it and take the shot, it will have history so we will be able to see it). Also show use a screen shot of gpu-z and cpu-z (memory and cpu tabs)

Yet as soon as i attempt to run a game (Bad Company 2 for example) the menu screen lags, then the load in lags for ages, then the game runs at stupidly low fps.

Is this a faulty card? or has it something to do with my other hardware? could my mobo be too old to handle this card, or is my processor bottle necking and slowing the whole pc?

I'd love to resolve this, been working on it solidly for 10 hours now

thanks for all the advice so far, but nothing seems to work
Don't expect decent frame rate with that CPU in BFBC2. Another member who recent upgraded to a 6950 2GB was still getting poor frame rate on his Phenom II X2 555BE, but after unlocking the CPU to quad, it instantly made huge improvement to the frame rate and with the game became smooth rather then jerking. Your frame rate being worse than before is because it is now running in dx11 mode.

the thing is, my 8800gts runs it smooth with that processor. Could it purely be a slow down due to dx11? if so how can i run bfbc2 in dx9 to test your theory?

Don't think it runs in dx9... probably dx10 minimum and it will be under the graphic settings somewhere (never played it, but it's always in graphics or advanced graphics)

The easiest way to check if your CPU is bottlenecking the GTX460 is to check the GPU usage. If your CPU is not bottlenecking the graphic card, the GPU usage should be pretty much at 95~100% at all time in BFBC2. You can use MSI Afterburner to check GPU usage.

notice the frame rate on the game test, never reaching anything over 15fps.

and the GPU usage is averaging 17 from the looks of it...

I'm too much of a newbie to make sense of all this info tbh

any help would be really appreciated

Your CPU is the obvious bottleneck in this instance. Your software configuration and GPU are fine. Surprised nobody has pointed this out from what you have said so far and the screenshots that followed.

its mad to think an upgrade would make BC2 barely run at all, you're suggesting that my CPU is 100% the cause of this issue?

Considering my old 8800GTS runs BC2 smoothly (30-60fps on medium settings) and now the 460 gtx runs it at 1-15fps. Is this really a CPU problem? would it actually make the frame rate worse? If so, it looks like i'll have to upgrade my mobo and cpu after all... but i'm skint!

Documents > BFBC2 > settings.ini (open it in notepad)

change DxVersion=11 to DxVersion=9 and test then try DxVersion=10 and test.

It was set as auto, i changed it to 9, and couldnt even get in game the menu was so slow. Just tested 10 now and the same result.

OK,

So if i clean my hard drive off completely, and reinstall windows from scratch could that fix it?

If so I need to ask 1 more question....

How do i reinstall windows if i've misplaced my disk. I have my key, just no disk. Any ideas?
