GPU upgrade made my fps worse??

Could easily be the DX11 change causing that issue. THE CPU being at 100% is the limiting factor for your FPS. Have you tried another game that is DX9/10 and not DX11?

Do what Walkerie said and that will prove if its the change in DX version, which will be using a lot more power from your system to render the slightly shinier things. Make sure HBAO hasnt turned itself on, and that any other DX11 only features have turned on now they are available.

Windows

If you still have the Windows key give Microsoft a ring as I'm sure with a valid key they would send you your disk.

It was set as auto, i changed it to 9, and couldnt even get in game the menu was so slow. Just tested 10 now and the same result.

OK,

So if i clean my hard drive off completely, and reinstall windows from scratch could that fix it?

If so I need to ask 1 more question....

How do i reinstall windows if i've misplaced my disk. I have my key, just no disk. Any ideas?

thats strange. Really shouldnt be doing that, I will have a think, but can you test another game like anything based on the source engine or unreal 3 engine?

its mad to think an upgrade would make BC2 barely run at all, you're suggesting that my CPU is 100% the cause of this issue?

Considering my old 8800GTS runs BC2 smoothly (30-60fps on medium settings) and now the 460 gtx runs it at 1-15fps. Is this really a CPU problem? would it actually make the frame rate worse? If so, it looks like i'll have to upgrade my mobo and cpu after all... but i'm skint!

In short, yes. 8800GTS is a much easier card to drive. The bottleneck issue is worse in CPU bound games like BC2, GTA4 and a slew of other console ports, particularly when you pair a four year old CPU with a more recent mid-end GPU. It shouldn't be as bad in less CPU bound games/benches, but you will still see a performance drop from the card's optimum output.

Hence the old adage: match your kit well. :)

So if i clean my hard drive off completely, and reinstall windows from scratch could that fix it?

No. You cannot resolve a hardware bottleneck with a software tweak.

Edit: Scratch that, was thinking of 280.19 beta. Still, try rolling back to an earlier release like 275 and report back. Chap over here seems to have had a similar problem: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=64977&sort=5

If your seing worse fps in dx9 or 10 mode then, giving a format wouldn't hurt, windows could be being silly and messing things up, your unlikely to however reach good performance in dx11, but you might get it to match or better your old performance in dx9, its worth a go.

Could someone confirm that his card has only one power input needed? just ruling that it might be booting on just one power cable.

If the higher dx version in a game didnt add any of the new features, it would be better performance, since they are faster at doing hte same things, just then you add shiny things and it brings the fps back down.

just ran shogun 2 on dx9 with everything set to Ultra, worked perfectly fine.... It MUST be a dx11 issue coupled with a slower CPU!

At last a resolution to my problems!

Any way I can play BC2 again tho? I'll see if I can find a way of forcing dx9/10.

I only play these 2 games at the moment but wanted a small upgrade to handle BF3 if even on the lowest settings.

So what next? a 2500k? and mobo upgrade too?

Or can my mobo handle all this new shizzle?

Thanks for the feedback so far guys :)

youll want a new mobo and a 2500k, could get these for around £230 together.

I thought you already forced it into dx9 and dx10?

Turn the settings.ini into read only after youve done it and check there still on dx9 or dx10

The smallest upgrade that will go a long way would be to upgrade your CPU to a 2nd hand Q6600 (£50~£60) and overclock it to 3.0GHz...or higher if possible depending on your motherboard. Otherwise if you are doing platform upgrade, a i3 2100 would be fast enough to not bottleneck your GTX460. Despite the i3 2100 is only a dual-core CPU, it is actually faster than a Core2Quad and Phenom II X4 at 3.7GHz in games, even in games that use 4 cores like BFBC2.

id go for the Q6600 option, if you want something future proof your gonna have to splash a bit of money, but a Q6600 will run bc2 nicely.

You could try reinstalling bc2. I have had a few games in the past that did not like my new graphics card. A new install fixed the problems. As said above though bc2 loves quad cores.

im gunna start saving my pennies for a new mobo, cpu and cooler now. probably aiming for xmas. I'll stick with this gtx460 for now, as i'm pretty sure theres nothing wrong with the card (tested it in a friends PC who has a quadcore cpu, 4 gb ram and a gtx 460 by Gigabyte) and its absolutely fine. I think it must be the cpu holding it back, even tho in my eyes it should improve from the 8800gts i'm not in a position to argue with the fact it doesnt.

I'll bide my time and force run dx9 for a few months.

Serious thanks to all those that helped me, suggested things and offered advice.

Dan :)

Bad Company 2 can be a funny game at times, If you dont want to re-install it strait away I would edit the settings file to DX9 or DX10 and then save the file as read only. I was in a position where the bloom was causing the screen to go white or black (Dam you Xfire) and the file would do some strange things unless you saved it as read only afterwards.
