Hi all,

Can't say I really 'need' an upgrade tbh but you know it's like....

Anyway the XFX pre order deals seem pretty good and I was looking at the 290 for £260.

Having checked the MM for value of my 7950 it seems like I'd be spending £160-£190 after selling my 7950. So I thought maybe get a 280X and xfire it with my 7950.

At £200 would you get the XFX 280X or something else? Or would you just move to the 290 and get rid of the 7950?

Look forward to your input.

Cheers

P.S. I game at 1080p, 120Hz play most of the big titles just not as much these days. Just like new toys :)

Well, can only speak for myself, but if I were upgrading now, looking at the cards in your post, I would sell the 7950 and buy the XFX 290.

Thanks Kelt, just to clarify; I'd be open to other 280Xs that would probably be better overclockers (in case that changes anything). The main reason I chose my PSU was to have plenty of room for xfire or SLI but every time it comes round I end up just getting a more powerful single GPU again....lol

Get the 290, with xFire your performance is always going to depend on xFire scaling.

The 290 is about 40% faster than a 7950, if the xFire scaling is working well you might get another 40% on to of that, but if its not....

The 290 is also the newest architecture, the 7950 is getting a bit old now.
Its also perfect for 1080P 120Hz, with Mantle (works perfectly on the 290, while the 7950's can have problems with it) your not limited by the CPU, so in something like BF4 MP your Minimum FPS are dependant on the GPU, not the CPU.

In BF4 My Minimum FPS are about 90+, if i turn the AA down I could hold a 120 FPS game easily.

290;
Best Mantle support
No CF worries
very powerful
just one GPU in the case
Possibility of 290 CF at a latter date when they sell for Peanuts.

Thanks, seems to be a consensus to go for the 290.

Hmmmm - decisions decisions....

Oh well, Gibbo just said that the XFX 290 glows, so it's pretty much a no-brainer to buy it then!

:D

Sorry to hijack the thread, but rather than starting a new one I have to admit I am also somewhat tempted by the XFX. I'm totally out of the loop as my system has been going strong for some time now - the old standard ASRock z68 Extreme 4 Gen 3 with an i5-2500k and Crucial M4 amongst other things. The graphics card is an MSI lightning 6970, which is now stupidly noisy and doesn't work on one of the bios settings for some reason, on a big hp 3065. I normally game in windowed mode at 1900x1080/1200 though.

Is the XFX a worth upgrade or is there better value for money on a single slot card?

The 290 is 'by far' the best card for its money and the XFX is the cheapest, and will double the performance of your 6970, no exaggeration.
