GPU upgrade

Hi all

thinking of upgrading my GPU, really CBA waiting for the 3xxx series.

i game at 144hz at 1440 and i currently own a gtx 1070, had this before i went 1440p and higher refresh rate. currently playing games at medium to low to achieve higher framerate. i do like to turn up some eye candy to make it look pretty

will never be going 4K and primarily play FPS game, currently stuck on Apex and Warzone.

i know there is the camp that will say wait, and other like me who like to live in the moment.

my main question is, should i go for a 2080 super or 2070 super? is there like a % difference.

additionally, to help me decide, how much of an increase is even a 2070 super compared to a 1070, i hear its significant?

thanks

Go for the very best you can afford: the 2080 Super. Both will give you a noticable increase in performance over the 1070 and there's a 10%-20% difference between the two. But you're still going to have to compromise on the graphics: even a 2080 Super won't give you a solid 144 fps at ultra settings.

OCUK have the Zotac on special offer. It's £100 cheaper than the other I'd recommend, the Gigabyte. Do check that it will fit in your case!

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £659.10 (includes shipping: £9.90)

No matter how much you pay, you won't be getting future proofness right now.
Using that advertising feature of RTX cards, raytracing, makes their framerates crash down all the way to even 50%.
So unless having enough money "for sheeps to eat", 2070 Super is the most expensive sense making.
Any higher will just crash down performance per price and is more money lost for no real future value.

thanks both, i have no desire to enable raytraying in any games because the performance lost vs the visual gain is next to useless. i understand about the turning down the settings, but currently i can hold above 110fps in apex on low settings with less than half of the scenes running close to 144.

any thoughts on MSI?

i can get hold of one local to me from a local PC shop

GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 8 GB VENTUS XS OC Graphics Card

this one in particular

going from gtx 1070 then 2070S . I have 2080 and smashed 1440p 144hz gaming to be honest.

going for 2080S then Gigabyte Windforce goes for £635 > though a bit overkill for Apex , warzone- pretty handy .

thank you, i did think about the gigabyte windforce but its massively long, my case is a h440 and i think it will be too tight.

If you have good case ventilation and good airflow, the Ventus has a sufficiently good cooler. I have the 2080 model in a full tower and the thing doesn't go over 67c while gaming.

Might give you an idea of what you can expect.

Edit:

I also went from a 1070 @ 1440p, albeit with G-Sync, to a 2080 and I agree with orbitalwalsh that it smashes 1440p gaming, even with this 4790k.

ive got a gigabyte 2080 super gaming OC and its a great card for 1440p gaming and the 4 year warranty is a nice bonus.

one thing worth mentioning tho is if you want to water cool check for blocks before buying one,ive got the rev2.0 and no one makes a block to fit,im really torn as to what to do,either sell it and get a block compatible 2080 super, upgrade to a 2080ti or wait till the next gen of nvidia.

water doesn't do so much for Turing cards unless you want to keep sound down, also like Pascal . Maxwell - all about temps and feeding as much voltage as you can get, and that needed water ! :D

send off your card to Alphacool and you'll get a free one after they 3D scan and produce - but lock down might effect it

Power phase delivery has been changed from Reference design and better - biggest change is the Caps and chokes

To be honest the water cooling is more about the distro plate and excess radiator area that ive got fitted lol.
