Graduate Job

I got an excellent 2:1 but really stuffed up my A levels, has anyone managed to get into these top companies with low UCAS points?

Not to dampen your hopes but considering the mass of applications these companies get id think they may well want a 1st. Graduate jobs are quite a rare commodity, a 1st gets you noticed as someone who is either gifted or has grafted really hard - both of which a company welcomes.

2:1's are a BIT too common - im not saying there's anything WRONG with a 2:1 here for those that will be frowning about now, for a majority of jobs 2:1 will put you ahead but for graduate jobs you really are having to be amazingly good.

Or as someone who sat in the library all day and didn't do a lot else.

Whilst I am sure there are a fair few genuinely gifted graduates with 1st class degrees that also have work experience, a social life, interests outside academia and were head of a committee or something, I'd say generally recruiters would prefer someone with a 2:1 and those traits, to someone with a 1st without them.

As long as you meet the requirements for the graduate scheme your application will at least be examined, so you need to be sure that it really stands out and contains everything needed to prove you are ideal for the job.

Cisco only require 2:2 for the grad scheme, definitely worth a look.

BT also have good opportunities for graduates, but are strict on the 2:1 (even with a really positive placement, as I know to my cost!)

Accenture will want a first. And your soul.

CapGemini have offices in Birmingham which is close(ish :) ) to Coventry, and their scheme is apparently pretty good, though you'll need a 2:1.

My company let me in to London with a 2:2, but they are a group of con artists.

As for the course waiting its 10% year 1, 30% year 2, 60% year 3 at warwick (which is where the OP goes).

Thats harsh, for me its

0% year 1, 20% year 2, 80% year 3

or something like that. I goto Warwick too.... (engineering)

or am I SERIOUSLY wrong?!

Back to OP q, dude I think this year is the time to take the Careers fairs seriously, compared to what i've seen at other uni's, we get a lot of Finance/Business, who even swamp the Engineering Fair. But go through and thoroughly talk to people. I hear the aim of the game is to make yourself known and get a business card!

I've never known the first year be worth anything amoungst any of my mates at any Uni, but I guess it might be possible.

(At loughborough it was weighted 0:25:75).

People who do Maths, Physics, CS etc at Warwick dont have fun...especially in their first few weeks! (Tests all over the place!)

A small, rapidly expanding product-led consultancy called CHP. Grads are starting at £35k, it's a 9-6 working day, and everyone is nice and enjoys a few drinks.

Support? As a Graduate? At a Blue Chip?

With a 2:1 you can easily be a consultant or software engineer at a Blue Chip, unless you want to fix up computers and install windows and manage user accounts as a "career"

Admin work is boring, under paid and nowhere near as exciting as the real deal :)

BT also have good opportunities for graduates

*snigger*

I am finishing my Computer Science BSc degree from Warwick Uni next Summer, and am expected to get a 2:2 or a 2:1 if I really push it.

I need to start applying for graudate positions as soon as possible, so I was hoping people could recommend me companies which has positions in London or Coventry.

I am looking to start off with support, system management or networking.

Any help will be greatly appreciated :)

there are literally thousands of IT graduates sweeping the job market. Not to mention all the blaggers who've seen the "skills train" and "computeach" adverts telling them that the average salary in IT is 37k (lol)

to distinguish yourself from the crowd, you need an edge. And that usually means experience, did you get a degree with a placement ? if so that might help.

if not, try getting some experience by doing volunteer work. Maybe get yourself involved at uni, if you have any societys or out of hours schemes that require volunteers to keep them running. University of teesside has its own on-line games server and forums, not to mention LAN party's run in the summer holidays. See if you can get yourself helping with something like that.

as for what jobs are out there

try

www.reed.co.uk

and www.cwjobs.co.uk

both good for IT jobs

also try the following IT recruitment company's

www.computerpeople.co.uk
www.mayfieldcurzon.com

they advertise on the above sites, but sometimes have jobs they only advertise on their own website.

First year counting is pretty standard at Imperial, think was mine was worth something like 10-15% and needless to say I lost most of that due to far too much partying, and getting a 2.1 is a bit touch and go at the moment.

I do the same course as you and I just finished my 12 week internship at Goldman Sachs doing technology and I can tell you for sure that you will require a 2:1 to get onto any of the investment bank's graduate scheme!

Good luck,

If it helps, I got through a telephone interview to the first round assessment and video interview with Microsoft with no A-levels and a 2:1 So give them a go :). I have bugger all by way of extra curricular activities to show for all my slacking around :(

[edit] I didn't manage to get on a placement during uni either, so no relevant experience lol

I'm starting on IBM's graduate scheme in november. I have a 2.1 in maths with a B, B, C at A2-level and poor interview technique. most jobs need a 2:1 I have to agree. I was on 53% after year 2 and I did it so it's readily possible to bring things back.

Explain? You have me worried! Not that I'm on the grad scheme per se anymore, but I'm still going to work for them.
Mismanaged and losing money hand-over-fist. Which is amazing given their position.

As a matter of interest, what did you put down for 'one of IBMs greatest achievements in the last 5 years' on the app form?

Make sure you get that 2:1. It makes quite a big difference with the graduate programmes, providing you get over the UCAS points hurdle.

WTF.....are you like the future me.....first you take my car and your doing stuff relating to finance.(im currently doing an accounts degree) I dont get this 2:2,2:1 stuff, care to explain?
