Grand Theft Auto 4

Anybody like the MP on the pc version?, when i played 360 i only played for a few days and even wasted my 2 month free xbl subscription afterward.. wasnt that fussed on it tbh i thought SA-MP is much better, even if it doesnt look half as good.

Btw i cant believe a game like this runs like crap on good computers, saying the higher detail graphics settings are for future pc's is a joke.. badly ported/coded crap :p maybe a patch can fix it.

Absolutely breathtaking that they could release a game in 2008, nearly 2009, which doesn't support AA. Games have supported AA for years. For them to say they didn't realise PC gamers would care so much about AA either means they are lying or are incredibly out of touch.

Yes it is more important, but still, AA is such a basic thing to include, and good graphics improve the overall experience.

Having played through a bit of the game now, it isn't half as fun as previous GTAs in my book.

Anyone playing this on a Dell XPS M1730 with Sli??? That's my next planned upgrade so I'm wondering how it handles it.

Taxi....

or not?

Turning to gameplay issues for a moment, has anyone succeeded in hailing a taxi as you could in the PS3 version? I hit the "E" key to stop the taxi, stand by the rear door and hit "F" as prompted by the O/S Help, only to find I just jack the cabbie out of his vehicle. This has happened every time now - a bit tedious as once you get "moved" to Bohan but some of your missions are still based in Dukes and Broker the taxi was a useful "trip skip" feature.

yeah even saints row 2 got delayed so they could add AA options!

Rockstar Toronto or something on GTA Forums?

Yeah, exact words being -

"Our game is currently only Direct X 9. We've done everything possible to make it look great for DX9.

We use a Deferred Lighting model that most other game don't use. Ill try and get some more info up next week since the technical details since this will probably be interesting to many of you. AA does not work very well with our lighting model unless the game is DX10.

For the forums it's clear that there is huge demand for AA support, so we will be looking into it. "

all well and good saying that, but if Rockstar don't give the game to ATi or Nvidia, not a lot that can do about that. Considering, from memory, Bioshock, Crysis, errm, actually thats the big ones, theres deffo been more, both companies have had hotfixes to sort out graphical glitches and often boost performance in the days before a release, so both companies have pretty much proven that given a little help they can infact get drivers sorted. Both companies being late says to me, R* were late giving it to them and based on memory amounts being used, and performance, complete lack of stability, it wasn't exactly an easy optimisation for either company.

Lets be honest, most of us have computers setup that blow away a PS3/Xbox, bad ports can cause games to not run great but, Assasins Creed, amongst dozens of other games have been ported across with basically no issues what soever. All that add's up, to me at least, to say that R* are the ones that massively screwed the pooch here, not that they are PC's, not ATi, not Nvidia, not the need for a quad core. The fact that they did a woeful job.

Sure, it was just that i had read this which says Nvidia and ATI had started making drivers for this months ago. Now obviously i dont know the norm for companies getting drivers ready for a game, but a few months would have seemed like plenty of time to me. Ah well, sod it :).

"IGN: When you say these kinds of problems what are you referring to?

Arthur Chiang: I've been reading about the texture drop out problem and I've been seeing what kind of hardware they have and it's usually the Nvidia 7900 series. We saw that problem two or three months ago and it was addressed by a beta driver that we received from them. Everybody was hoping that it would be out for our release but it seems we've just missed it. It has been released today so I think that's going to address a large proportion of those problems. Even right out of the box, as soon as you put that in, if you don't have this driver it's going to appear as there's no textures which is a pretty significant problem."

Another thing about this game, all the cutscenes are so boring, long-winded and tedious. The cutscenes in all the previous GTA games were to the point and usually humorous in some way.

I see skeeter still hasn't bothered to actually tell us how to mod the game files without the hash checks breaking the game?

He has explained it and I have repeated it awhile ago (before he posted his results) where you can find the files to change graphics settings and he has said he only changed a few values in the file:

1:
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\common\data
2:
Open visualSettings.xls with your favorite spreadsheet program, be it openoffice calc or microsoft office excel.
3:
Change some values, in this case skeeter has modified ''misc.DOFBlurMultiplier.HD 1''
''misc.DOFBlurMultiplier.SD 0,5''
which can be found on line 235&236 in visualSettings.xls.

how are people forcing the aa with the new drivers? the nivida control panel? Doesn't seem to work for me.

It doesn't for me either, I think people lied, and it looks like ati users also don't get AA working.
If anyone gets AA working in any way, please tell us so how, even if it gives other problems I just want aa above anything else atm !

Agreed :( !
I have never found myself wanting to skip the cutscenes in a gta game, I loved them in San Andreas and Vice, they were class and actually interesting. In GTA IV I find myself skipping half the clips though :(.

They made the game darker, and imo its not as fun as it used to be.

I found Vice City & San Andreas much more fun to play and control, and as you mention some of the humour that made them both funny in a corny way is gone.

And (this shows that you haven't read his posts AT ALL), he goes on to say that visualsettings.xls is ignored, and infact its visualsettings.dat that needs to be modded (straight forward, as its plain text formatted).

However, he also says that YOU NEED TO DO SOMETHING SPECIAL TO STOP SECUROM FROM FAILING TO LAUNCH THE GAME WHEN IT DETECTS A MODIFIED FILE!

He hasn't said what this is yet!

Maybe he's running the no-cd crack? I've put that on now anyway with my legit copy as I hate having disks in the drive spinning up and down when playing.

Ok sorry :(:(. I didn't read it properly again. I always seem to miss bits of text :(. I think I know what he means though, haven't you thought about he might be simply circumventing the securom the obvious way?

Well while playing last night I was keeping an eye on my fps and most of the time on default settings it was hovering around 30-35 which is (in my opinion) playable so I'm quite happy performance wise - there's only better to look forward too!
