We knew it was happening—I mean, obviously it was happening—but now it's official: Rockstar has confirmed that a new Grand Theft Auto is coming.

"With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series," the studio said in the latest Grand Theft Auto community update.

"With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered—and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details."

Note that it's not necessarily Grand Theft Auto 6 in name—a full, formal title wasn't given—but given how Rockstar has named the first five mainline games in the series, I think it's a reasonable bet the pattern will continue. Whatever it ends up being called, it will be very interesting to see how the tone of the game compares to previous entries in the series: Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser, one of the primary creative forces behind the Grand Theft Auto series, left the studio in 2020.

There's no indication of a release target, although the great likelihood is that it's still a long way off. In January, analysts predicted that the next Grand Theft Auto game wouldn't be out until sometime in Take-Two Interactive's 2024 fiscal year, dropping it sometime between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024. If precedent holds, PC gamers may have to wait even longer: The PC versions of Grand Theft Auto 4 and 5, and Red Dead Redemption 2, all came out well after the initial console releases: Eight months in the case of GTA4, and more than a year for GTA5 and Red Dead 2.

Edit - To apparently fill the OP a bit more i best put some text.

So erm its nice there stating its in the works, and well under way. Think that most of us knew that would probs be the case tho since its been so long since gta 5 release date tho i suppose some of us wondered if it was the last since the online segment has been worked on so long. Hopefully its a new location, and still has lots of missions and side quests which i enjoy doing in these games and the cars are nice to play with.

Wonder if there gona use fsr/dlss/ray tracing etc all these new techs since gta 5 came out.

Update nov 2023:

Edit 5th dec trailer

I am expecting a full on persistent online world really, with missions obviously dotted about the place. They can save an absolute fortune this way instead of making a full on SP game like they always do.

That's not an announcement, this is not news. The company that has been making GTA games for the past 25 years is making a GTA game where their last was probably the most successful game ever game. Shocker. If anything its bad news as it implies that they are not going to actually announce it anytime soon, which some were predicting.

All I am saying that it is not news, its mealy formal confirmation that its being worked on. Not more of a surprise as the latest Call of Duty. I was hoping to get a trailer this year but this "news" now implies that the trailer and true announcement won't come for a while, so its going to be a number of years before the release. A number more before the PC version, and a number more before it is a reasonable price. And for a game that is the one a a few that I am really looking forward to, having the realisation that is it so far off is a bit of a disappointment. Imagine you are at a train station expecting a train, instead of seeing the train coming in the distance you hear an announcement that its on its way, implying its not coming as soon as it might have.

Becausssse?

Also, GTA 6: Vietnam? Shanghai? :D

They succumbed to greed, re-released GTA V about 4 times on different platforms and expected people to carry on buying it each time, shark cards, milking, the list goes on.

I used to like them but in recent years.....

This is just my opinion though, don't take it to heart or anything :)
