Hi Guys

Need some help with connecting my graphics card to my power supply

I purchased the following and need to know what I need in order to connect the power supply to the graphics card

ATI Radeon HD 5830 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
OcUK Memphis Tower Case - Black

it seems to require PCI Express 6 Pin leads but the power supply does not have them

Any help would be appreciated.

Best Regards

Dex

PS when I opened the Tower packaging the courier service had bounced it the Polystyrene was smashed and the face of the case was completely detached, all the plugs snapped off but 2. Need it urgent so liquid nails on now

Hi there,

Personally, I would not suggest trying to run such a powerful graphics card with the "500W" PSU that is included with that case (assuming you are using the one that comes with the case). I believe these PSUs are suited for low power usage computers (office PCs and the like), which don't require high-power discrete graphics cards (hence no PCIE power connectors). However, for a gaming system with a power hungry graphics card like the 5830 I strongly suggest you invest in a new PSU that can handle it.

A PSU like this is good quality, enough power capacity, the correct connections, good value and gets a good write up.

Hi Mate,

Thanks for the advice but I have already purchased the case and power supply,

What would happen, Would the Card just not work or would it damage the graphics card
Is there no adapter I could get, I was informed a 500W PSU would be ok

Cheers

Just to explicitly confirm, you are using the PSU that comes with the memphis case, right? Would you be able to upload a photo of the ratings sticker on the side of the PSU?

You could connect up the graphics card to the PSU using a pair of these adapters. But I would strongly suggest you don't do this. If you draw too much power from a low quality PSU then it can not only harm the PSU, but the graphics card and any component connected to it (motherboard and CPU included).

IMHO it isn't worth the risk, hence the recommendation for a new PSU.

As for a 500W PSU being OK, the advice should have been worded: "a quality 500W PSU would be OK".
