Hi guys, just looking for a bit of advice. Was playing a bit of Crysis 2 earlier and the game crashed and PC froze. Didn't think much of it and just reset. Went to play it again and it crashed and froze again at the same place within a minute. Had a black screen with some grey vertical lines. Reset again but this time I just got the 'no signal' message on my screen. Thought it was odd and had to reset a couple of times before I got any picture on the screen. I gave Furmark a quick run and I keep getting black, pink, brown screens with vertical lines within a minute. Does this sound like the card is dying? Its a 5850. I can boot into Windows and it seems fine (typing from the PC now), its just when I do anything to stress the card.

Thanks

Ouch, does not sound good at all, you got the latest ati drivers I presume?

You're probaby lookin at RMA'ing that baby

Yeah I'm using the latest drivers. Doubt I would be able to RMA as its got an aftermarket cooler on.

Sounds like it's faulty. Have you previously overclocked the card? How long have you had the card and have you the latest, both GPU and motherboard chipset drivers?

When it crashes i'm guessing you have to hold in the restart button on your PC to restart, and it's not possible to CTRL-ALT-DEL?
I doubt he'll need to put a 5850 in the oven Trisp, they're not that old.

No, I've never overclocked the card. I bought the card in November 2009 and I've tried both 11.3 and the 11.4 preview drivers, although its had every release during the time I've owned it. I've not tried the latest chipset drivers so that could be worth a go. I do have to hold the reset or power button down to get it to restart.

Is it worth replacing the thermal tape on the Vram and the other bits that have it on? I'm using the stock heatsink plate that covers the ram and other bits and then a Thermalright T-rad2 for the gpu core. The only reason I ask is that it only seems to crash/freeze when the VDDC temp goes over 58c. I mean if it is totally knackered then I'll just get a new one.

You could put the original cooler back on and hope they don't notice

I suppose that's an option but knowing my luck they probably would :p But then again I have nothing to lose if I do, other than postage costs and probably a testing fee.

have u checked the seating of the card and have u a 2nd pci-e slot you can put it in to test

Also how long ago did you dust the card out (just a thought as some never)

I did reseat the card yesterday, although I haven't tried the 2nd pci-e slot so I'll just go and give that a shot. There isn't any dust in the heatsink (well none that I can see).

card id say is defenatly to blame

Put the stock cooler on and RMA it or Oven it but it is still under warentee RMA it

Yeah I think I'll do that. Just need to get a cheap pci-e card from OcUK and then I'll get this one RMA'd. Just making sure, it is a 2 year warranty with MSI?

Does anyone know how long it takes for an RMA to MSI? I sent them a message through there online customer service but it appears no one has looked at it yet.
