Hey guys I am new here,

I need some help,
my graphics cards fan has just failed and I need to know how to repair it as the manufacturer isn't giving me warranty as I live in the wrong country and the supplier isn't answering my emails.

The graphics card is an xfx 6790 and the problem is the fan has failed.

I could really do with either a cheap aftermarket cooler or a replacement fan could one of you recommend one for me thanks.

In what way failed?

Aftermarket coolers aren't all that cheap. You'd be looking at around £30 I think for an Arctic Twin Turbo or Gelid Icy Vision. Both would cool that card admirably I'd expect. That's provided they fit of course.

As for a replacement fan it might be tricky to do a straight swap as you can't buy replacement fans, but if it's the one with the red fan in the centre of the card you could remove it and strap a standard 80/92mm fan to the outside of the cooler and hope it works ok. You'd need extra space though.

The fan is rattling and buzzing to the extreme and the card is only 6 weeks old and it was fine for the first 4 weeks.

I'm quite new to pc gaming so could really do with a link to a cooler or fan the would definitely fit and I can post a picture up if that helps.

Thanks

RMA time then. The only way I'd replace the cooler on the graphics card was if I wanted it quieter, not because it failed prematurely.

What country are you in? In the UK your supplier (ie. the shop) has a duty to provide a minimum of one years cover for faulty goods, in the Sales of Goods Act it states the product should be 'as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality'.

Under UK law, buyers in England and Wales can get a partial refund or full repair up to six years after the purchase was made (five years from discovery in Scotland). The refund should take into account how much use the customer has already had of a product.

I think a fan should work for at least a couple of years so you should be able to argue that you haven't damaged the card and it's down to poor manufacture/choice of parts and provided it is in good condition and not overclocked then the burden of proof should pass to the supplier to show it has been misused and that caused the fault.

In Europe (and should apply to the UK too really) there is a directive regarding this, it states "A two-year guarantee applies for the sale of all consumer goods everywhere in the EU. In some countries, this may be more, and some manufacturers also choose to offer a longer warranty period."

I think Apple got in trouble in Italy recently for trying to flog their aftercare service and not making it clear the consumer already had two years of cover, link.

Unfortunately I purchased it from a computer shop that is now completely ignoring all my emails and they don't have a phone number.

xfx are saying they will charge me £55 to replace the fan.

So even if I have to spend £30 on an aftermarket cooler its better than sending it to them so if you could recommend a cooler for the xfx 6790 I would be grateful.

Here is a link to the card a bought I think it uses the same pcb as one of the bigger well known models but not sure.

the supplier isn't answering my emails.

Document all the emails you have sent but pick up the phone and speak to someone, document your conversation and email them the summary of the call if an agreement is reached and then hopefully proceed with returning the card under warranty. Even better if you bought from a shop as go down and cause a fuss and they'll soon sort you out.

If not then send them a letter of complaint by recorded delivery explaining the issue and the lack of help/support, if you don't receive a response in a month then I'd look to take them to a small claims court for the cost of a replacement.

I'd also contact the manufacturer as although they are washing their hands of the matter I'd explain what the behaviour of the supplier has been like and you never know they might help you out directly.

If the shop/supplier is refusing RMA contact the manafacturer direct. Make sure you have proof of purchase and then take a visit to the shop/supplier and have a nice little one on one chat :)

Ahh just saw you said they have no telephone number, in that case you could contact your Trading Standards or equivalent, plus in the UK all companies have to register with Companies House and I'd presume something exists where you are so you should be able to locate the names of the owners/directors and possibly a phone number.

Send them a registered postal letter so you know they received it stating your intentions of proceeding with legal action, I don't see why they would be so rubbish as they'll just send it back to the manufacturer/their supplier for credit.

The computer shop was on eBay and a website but neither had phone number or address so phoning them or sending a letter can't be done.

I'm not bothered about having to buy an aftermarket cooler as the fans were pretty loud anyway and I will just take this as a lesson learned and next time by a gigabyte card.

I really can't be bothered with the hassle of contacting trading standards and writing letters I would much rather just buy a new cooler any suggestions on the cooler?

The computer shop was on an auction site and a website but neither had phone number or address so phoning them or sending a letter can't be done.

Prime example of why I don't purchase anything from auction sites these days, have you contacted the auction site? You can log a case with them and I'd think you have a good chance of getting the money back, at least part of it minus an admin fee, particularly if you paid via Paypal.

If I were you I'd look to purchase it from OCUK - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-059-AR

Might cost a few quid more but you'll get what you ordered and a full warranty, you can look it over and if you don't like it just return it under the DSR rules for a full refund (minus shipping I think).

It says it will support the card but it is only £15 quid so not going to be the best thing on the market, if you want improved cooling and it to be quieter then you'd be looking at £30 plus for a better quality cooling solution.

Do you think the card would overheat and lockup with a £15 cooler?

I think the card it quite a low model anyway and doesn't get too hot but I have no experience with this sort of thing.

Can you link me to a better one?

Thanks for your help
