Graphics card issues or something else ?

Original setup where my problem first started :
Z77-D3H S1155 Intel Z77
Core i5-3570K S1155
Gigabyte Radeon R9 290X OC
8GB (2x4GB) Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz CL9 XMP
256GB 830 Series SATA 6Gb/s 2.5" SSD
Windows Pro 8.1
600w corsair psu

Assumed it was a motherboard issue after troubleshooting so bought a new mb+cpu :
Gigabyte z97x-ud3h-bk
i7-4790k
Gigabyte Radeon R9 290X OC
8GB (2x4GB) Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz CL9 XMP
256GB 830 Series SATA 6Gb/s 2.5" SSD
Windows Pro 8.1
600w corsair psu

My problem - The graphics card fails to be recognised in the x16 slot but boots to desktop in the x8 slot. After a few minutes I get screen corruption along with the popup to tell me the graphics driver has stopped responding but has been restarted. Then it tends to crash / reboot.

I've got upto date graphics drivers / latest bios. (only thing i've not looked into is the gpu bios ? - never tried this before)
Tried the motherboard out of my case to make sure it's not shorting out somewhere / Tried with only the bare minimum components plugged in.

Disabled the cpu intel graphics in the bios and uninstalled the drivers from my windows install.
Set memory to run at 'enhanced stability' mode in the bios / also tried all memory slots paired or single module.

Tried an older graphics card (HIS HD 7950 3072MB GDDR5) and the same problem persists.

Tried another power supply (750w corsair psu).

The integrated graphics run games without any issues.

The only thing I've not swapped out so far is the memory / and I'm trying both my graphic cards out on a friends computer atm.

I must say, my patience has been tested :D ... but i refuse to throw the towel in ... for now ...

Any ideas ?

I take it you are plugging in the 6+8 pin power for the GPU? Are you using adapters to do this?

You've tried two corsair PSU's. Do they use the same cables? Have you used the same cables each time?

Yes, I made sure the 6+8 pins are firmly located, the psu's are not the modular type so have their own none removable cables (Corsair CX600 & CX750).

Edit : Not using any adapters anywhere, the psu's come with a good selection. Perhaps too good, looks like an octopus has decided to take up residence in my case atm ...

Yes, did a full fresh install of windows (latest download from MS site) and made sure I had all updated motherboard drivers along with bios from the Gigabyte website.

I'm wondering if my original motherboard Z77-D3H has damaged both my graphics cards in some way. I guess I need to confirm that they both work in my friends rig.

Or perhaps it is my memory sticks, but it seems odd that they work perfectly well with the integrated graphics.

If your memory is the only original component it might be worth trying one stick at a time to see if that gives you any better results? It's a very strange issue you are having!

I've tried the memory in every possible combination, paired / single stick.

It's a very strange issue you are having!

And expensive issue too :(

I've googled to see if I can find anyone posting similar issues, with the mb/gpu combo I have, there seem to be a few but most don't have any indication of the problem getting resolved.

Did the GPU ever work on your old system ok, or has it done this since you installed it?

What is the PSU connected to, wall outlet, extension lead, surge protector or a UPS?

The HIS card worked for a long time then started getting intermittent graphic glitches that seemed to get cured by reseating / reinstalling, I purchased the R9 290x for an upgrade plus an attempt to get rid of the problem. All seemed good for a few months then the problem returned.

Psu is connected to the wall socket via a short extension lead ... I will try another extension just in case.

Thanks for the replies btw :)
