Graphics Card upgrade from NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti

Can someone point me towards information on the mentioned memory bus issue the 970 (potentially) has? I am not familiar with what this means (in practical terms) — how and why would this impact performance of a 970 in my system (versus a 780Ti, which seems to be more recommended).

For example, will I even notice the following:

That all adds up, and while the 970 has just 1664 shader cores and 104 texture units, the 780 Ti can boast 2880 shader cores and 240 texture units. These are very significant differences.
...
When it comes to traditional texture fill rates, for instance, the 780 Ti's higher number of texture units seem decisive, giving it a fill rate of 222.7GT/sec. The 970, in contrast, limps to a rather pathetic 122.5GT/sec.
...
However, it's important to stress that many of these advantages are on paper rather than in reality.
...
So while the 256bit memory bus may be vastly inferior to the 780 Ti's 384bit version on paper, the reality may see the two come rather closer together.

Thanks!

The 780TI is a great card, but then so is the 970 in it's own way. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, as do most Gpu. Have a peruse of the link. Some good info on the 970.

Running a 970 on 1440p and have had no issues - CSGO(250+fps)/Arma3 (some servers 60+ fps lol)/WoW(50-100)/HoTS(tried it once, ran fine) BF4/BFH 50-80 on Ultra etc, in fairness I also use Gsync which makes it seem a lot better on Arma 3 for example if it drops to 30-50.

I only really play multiplayer games it's been more than fine for everything i've tried. If you're into intensive max settings/texture single player games then yeah I guess it might struggle a bit but it's been a great card for me for what I use it for.

Will it last you another 3 years? I don't know, I haven't seen much in the pipeline (for multiplayer games) that suggest this card will struggle soon, maybe GTA5 is the only one I can think of.

Ideally a Titan x would be perfect, or waiting for a 980ti.

Surely the 290x is the better option, especially @ 1440p. Performs the same as the rest at 1080 and then starts to pull away over 1080p. All this with the full 4gb vram out of the 970/780 .

Titan x if you have the money for it because it's a single card. Another good one is 295x2 which will probably give even more frames per sec but only if you don't mind crossfire. 3rd option wait for 390x and see what happens to the market then.
Any cards under that for that resolution is cutting it fine.

A lot of the cards mentioned here are very similar in performance and when you consider the op is using a 1GB card do you really think he's going to be crying about the 3fps difference between a 780Ti, 970 and 290X? Can't go wrong with either imo and all will be a monumental upgrade from a 560Ti. If it was me I would probably go with the 970 but the op can't lose with any of these awesome cards.

PS it feels like the world has gone a little bit crazy when the TX is even mentioned to play CSGO at 1440p. There is little point in even mentioning that halo card. It is really only for those that are extreme enthusiasts and must have all settings on Ultra with the latest games at any cost, which the op is obviously not obsessed with.

I have noticed that some games (SC2, Heroes of the Storm, CS:GO) push the limits of my build when I play in Windowed Fullscreen at 2560x1440 resolution.

Can people possibly take into consideration that the op is not deluded into thinking he can play all the latest Ubi ports on ultra at 1440p with a 970? The op seems to especially play games that a more CPU limited, so the assumption that he needs the latest beastly GPU power is wrong imo.

Oh. 290X or 970 are going to struggle a bit on max. See if you can pick up 2 normal 290s second hand for 300 that will manage it.

The 970 is a good card for a good price but at 1440p you risk running into the memory issue and if I were you I wouldn't take that risk.

Get the 980, 780Ti or 290x.

1) Yes - that card could do with being reaplced. A GTX980 or Titan X would have no trouble with 1440p. I would point out that the Titan X is the only card currently which handles 1440p perfectly without any issues!

Q2) Seeing as you're gaming at 1440p, a 970 wouldn't cut it, sorry! It's memoty architechture is 3.5gb + .5gb so you'll find it may struggle when using more than 3.5GB VRAM @ 1440p

3) Is £300 your limit? That would be 290x territory or a 780Ti for £250 (780Ti would be better really) I wouldn't spend too much though as in June AMD will release more cards & nVidia have the 980Ti in the pipeline!

4)Yes, simply swap is fine if staying with nVidia but make sure you've updated to the most recent driver!

Why recommend a 780ti with 3 gb's when your saying a 970 with 3.5 +.5 gb's wouldn't be enough for 1440?

Personally I don't think either is and would say wait for the 300 series rather than get a 290/290x but if you can't wait get a 290x or look for a 6gb 780.

"Or" the previous Titans if you can find them at the right money.

Great cards.
