Graphics cards that you "missed" out on...

The first one for me was voodoo 2 in SLI, it was either that or a voodoo 3. I went with the 3 in the end but I always wanted the SLI system just for the bragging rights.

Second was the 9800 pro, at the time I got a 5900 ult for a stupid price. Only to see the 9800 do better in every game for the next year until the 6800 GT saved me.

Voodoo 3 (3000 and 3500) were easily better (or at least less quirky) than Voodoo2 SLi, I certainly enjoyed the upgrade.

I think I'm going to try and track down some obscure cards, just for the whole "I had one of those" buzz :D

6800GT, 7800GTX/7900GTX, X1900 but was so closer to trying that, 8800GTX, 7950GX2 and 8800GTS 512 all cards I missed out on and would have liked to have tried.

9700 Pro / 9800 Pro

Wanted both those cards, but never got around to buying one and buy the time I wanted to upgrade and had the cash there was newer stuff out and I got that instead. Kept hearing great things about those cards. The closest I got was a 9800SE / 9600XT :)

More newer - 8800GTX, was gonna get one instead of a 2900XT and really wanted one, but choose the 2900XT for a change from Nvidia and would have been pushed to afford the GTX... could have got one recently but instead went for my current card.

Would have liked to try the FX5950 Ultra, 9800XT and that mental dual core 1950pro thingy that ATi brought out while stalling for the release of the 2900XT.

Also wouldn't mind trying the new 8800GTS and definately looking forward to the (hopefully soon to be released) 8800GX2. :)

I never really got into graphics cards until my 9600XT. I would have loved to get my hands on some Voodoo action, or maybe a GF2/GF3.

As it was I did have a GF2MX, although you can't really call that a "3D accelerated" card tbh. :D

One last huge Voodoo cards would have been good. Bought a Geforce 2 GTS at the time. This was when Nvidia started to get things right.

While most of the GF2MX line was rather bad... I bought the first revision Elsa Gladiac GF2MX which still had the same core as the GF2 GTS - but the crappy 64bit memory interface that was common on the MX - however the memory would over clock to around 275MHz IIRC which almost brought it back to the GTS performance... and being a gladiac the cores were binned on quality so it would overclock better than your average GTS... when you weren't memory bandwidth limited it did shine... in comparison the GF2MX200 which came in the PC my sister bought a couple of months later was 3.5x slower in 3D Marks.

SLI (any pair)- one day maybe?
The SiS Xabre's were an interesting proposition at the time as well, shame they never took off.
Agreed - bought one , good card BUT very few games supported and this killed it for me.

I very nearly bought a Voodoo 5 5000 a few years back (just to mess with),

5500 was sold in retail channels with 64mb of ram, the 5000 was the same thing but with only 32mb of ram and never made it to market. Out of the planned 4000 4500 5000 5500 and 6000 only the 4500 and 5500 seen the light of day. =/

7950gx2 quad sli - the name alone is worth it :D

9800xt - bought a 5950u instead, sure it was good but I found out what I missed out on when I started to learn about tech in some detail.

78xx series - had my 6800xt @ u and couldn't afford to upgrade to the xfx 7800gt black edition that I wanted

79xx series - the go 7950gtx in my old xps made me want to try 7900gtx sli

6800 ultra extreme 512mb sli edition - everything about it was insane. :D

I missed out on voodoo's as I was too young :(

Things I missed out on:

-Kyro II. Would have been nice to play around a bit with the 'free' AA and see how it scales on fast cpus
-ATI Radeon 9700pro. I built a pc in June 2002, then a few months later the 9700pro came out and blew everything else a way. This is probably the only 'top end' card I wish I could have bought - the most I've ever spent on a gfx card is £211 but I reckon shelling out over £300 might have been worth it for this puppy. Although hindsight is a wonderful thing and I probably wouldn't have justified the expense to myself even if it had been available.
-An SLI setup of some description, even if it was just 7300GT DDR3

On a related note I'd love to be able to benchmark modern budget cards (8400GS, 7300GT, 2400pro etc against previous generations. You know, to find out what a 8400GS was the equivalent of from say the Geforce FX or Radeon 9x00 range.
