hey, does anyone else get this problem?
When i'm playing games like COD4/5, CofH, FSX the screen regularly goes black and makes the games virtually unplayable. Then a balloon on the desktop says "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered." I've got the latest drivers installed, and a decent PSU. I want to start OCing the GPU but am reluctant to while this is happening.
I've got a Zotac 260-216 with the latest drivers (uninstalled the old drivers and ran driver sweeper)
Thanks guys, any help would be appreciated. :)

yup, just done that. No problems there.
it only seems to have started within the last 2/3 months. about the same time i added 2 more sticks of RAM. could that have anything to do with it?

isnt this a known issue with ati and nvidia drivers with windows. i got this message recently after a fresh install on a pc ive had for 2 years :( I removed the HD sound drivers installed by nvidia drivers, switched off aero and it now seems fine

I get this on my 4830. but recently its stopped doing it.
occasionally though, my screen will black for a second and come back with much better visuals (as though the card suddenly starts working), i only notice the difference when it actually does it because im used to seeing whats on screen when i start up, then it does that and it annoys me that my card isnt working properly.

Its mostly when a lot of vivid detail is on screen it suddenly pulls its pants up and kicks in.

As for the warning message though i just bumped my fan up a bit cause i thought it was overheating and now it doesnt do it anymore =/

it has happened with all drivers old and new. installed the latest ones yesterday. not overclocked and the temps are remarkably low. i'm considering just doing a complete rebuild...

I used to have this problem all the time AFTER I HAD RUN DRIVER CLEANER. It seems like it had deleted an important file. I ended up doing a full vista re-install and have not had the problem since.

just taken out the last 2 sticks of ram and now everything works perfectly. no error messages/freezing etc. plus i seems to be getting slightly better frame rates with just 2gigs of ram as opposed to 4!! how does that work!?

This happens to me when I OC my card, and forget to up the fan,.... It will play for a while but when it gets too hot, black screen, and same error as you.

Running 4 sticks of memory is more trouble than it's worth in my experience, you might need to loosen the memory timings to get 4 sticks all working without any problems.

Had the driver stopped responding on both flavours of cards (ati and nvidia)

Both cases it turned out to be by over enthusiastic overclocking

My latest venture into my 4870 bios was set at core:815 ram:925

This led to driver not responding every 10-20secs while in cod5

I changed bios to core:800 ram:915 and all is now well

Also, while i googled for answers i came across one that suggested to remove an update (i run vista ult x64) I did remove this update and also tried onboard sound instead of creative card

This did not work so hence i dropped my bios overclock

Maybe worth a try google'ing and try removing the update

(standard clock on my 4870 was core: 750 ram: 900 is anyone's interested)

i've set the memory timings back to auto and i don't get the problem. however at 5-5-5-15 it starts again. Which way should i go with the timings? or should i just leave it on auto?
